ImaginativeConservative: WWMD bracelets honor Mitt Romney's wobbling moral compass.
RobBlair comments on Feb 7, 2020:
Romney's (and all the Democrat Senators') specific moral failures: Ex Post Facto (not even post) - He is holding Trump accountable for an unpublished legal criteria. Abuse of power is not defined and leaves both parties with the freedom or fear of enforcing a vague accusation. Although I believe that some leeway is required due to the nature of the office, this is more than leeway. Innocent until proven guilty - Romney listed off the accusations against Trump as evidence of Trump's guilt. However, unproven accusations should never be accepted as evidence.

Nonsense. Donald Trump gave a fantastic speech promoting a country whose best days are yet to come. Nancy's tantrum was a side show worthy of my 3 year old. The honoring of Rush Limbaugh should remind us that in the not too distant past, there was no mainstream outlet for conservative thought. Don't get me wrong, there are things for us to work on. And, especially regarding spending, there are things that were said that I don't agree with. But, as Klavan states it, this has been the worst week for Democrats since Appomattox and it'd be a shame to not enjoy it.

The suggestion that the works of Shakespeare and indeed all of the greats (and the not greats too) throughout history is summed up by their matter and energy, is kindergarten. There is ugly and beauty, evil and good, the fantastic and mundane. These things are not contained in the natural world but exceed it. To choose to ignore the supernatural world would have to be like a deaf and blind man walking through a garden of vibrant colors and only experiencing the thudding of his feet against the pavement.

I will say that I would appreciate hearing more info from you since: - the Zizek position seems radically different from my perspective (Marxism continues to fail and capitalism continues to destroy poverty in the human race) - I support the idea of privatizing/corporatizing schools (today's public schools are 1950s schools with AC and computers). Boeing investing in a local community college so that students can learn in a robotics lab seems like a good thing. - Collective learning is being elevated in my industry (construction) with the advent of 3D modeling and team software.

A free country is an oxy moron.
RobBlair comments on Feb 3, 2020:
A free person is an oxymoron. Turns out that wherever you go, there you are. Sure, a libertarian would argue that an alcoholic should be free to drink, but is an alcoholic free to drink? No, they are a slave to their desires. So how does a group of alcoholics live with each other? They have laws and punishments that take away freedom in exchange for a social contract. Ideally, the laws and punishments are limited to lifestyles that have externalities (ex. not allowed to drive drunk but drink as you care to in your own home). The more moral a society is, the more free it can be. As morality decreases, the imposition of law increases (more cops) until a balance is exceeded and slavery is reimposed.

Libertarians who hold themselves to an ideal and refuse to make pragmatic choices do not improve anything. Why does that have to go all the way to the Supreme Court? The Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) dictates that foreign nationals should not receive green cards if they are “likely at any time to become a public charge.” Narrowly defining "public charge" as only cash assistance programs is absurd. RobBlair comments on Jan 27, 2020:
Notre Dame should now offer an African studies course based on Keith Richburg's "Out of America - A Black Man Confronts Africa" From the book's prelude - I WATCHED THE DEAD float down a river in Tanzania. It's one of those apocryphal stories you always hear coming out of Africa, meant to demonstrate the savagery of "the natives." Babies being pulled off their mothers' backs and tossed onto spears. Pregnant women being disemboweled. Bodies being tossed into the river and floating downstream. You heard them all, but never really believed. And yet there I was, drenched with sweat under the blistering sun, standing at the Rusumo Falls bridge, watching the bodies float past me. Sometimes they came one by one. Sometimes two or three together. They were bloated now, horribly discolored. Most were naked, or stripped down to their underpants. Sometimes the hands and feet were bound together. Some were clearly missing some limbs. And as they went over the falls, a few got stuck together on a little crag, and stayed there flapping against the current, as though they were trying to break free. I couldn't take my eyes off one of them, the body of a little baby. ... And yet I know exactly this feeling that haunts me; I've just been too embarrassed to say it. So let me drop the charade and put it as simply as I know how: There but for the grace of God go I. You see, I was seeing all of this horror a bit differently because of the color of my skin. I am an American, but a black man, a descendant of slaves brought from Africa. When I see these nameless, faceless, anonymous bodies washing over a waterfall or piled up on the back of trucks, what I see most is that they look like me. https://www.amazon.com/Out-America-Confronts-Africa-Republic-ebook/dp/B0030H7UN0

The Neocons Strike Back
RobBlair comments on Jan 24, 2020:
No need to read the tea leaves regarding Iran, just look at the deep state mechanization against Trump regarding the Ukraine affair. “There was a consensus in all of these meetings that this was a government that had a lot of promise, that was tackling corruption, and that we needed to support this government with security assistance,” Ms. Cooper [Defense Department Russia-Ukraine Guru] said. “In the Spring of 2019, I became aware of outside influencers promoting a false narrative of Ukraine inconsistent with the consensus views of the interagency... This narrative was harmful to U.S. government policy. While my interagency colleagues and I were becoming increasingly optimistic on Ukraine’s prospects, this alternative narrative undermined U.S. government efforts to expand cooperation with Ukraine.” - Lt Col Vindman What's weird is that this "consensus" was silent when Obama was sending Ukraine "... blankets and meals." - McCain. My conclusion is that this "consensus" is not a neocon issue but a deep state one. Maybe Trump didn't want the strike on Suleiman, but he had no problem calling off the strike that was planned after the downing of our drone by Iran.

RobBlair comments on Jan 23, 2020:
Love these guys - Totally on board with bashing post modernism so I skipped over those sections. I found it a bit tone deaf regarding morality and its need to bash a "premodernist" straw man. "It is the Enlightenment Narrative that creates this worship of reason, not reason itself. In fact, most of the scientific arguments against the existence of God are circular and self-proving. They pit advanced scientific thinkers against simple, literalist religious believers. They dismiss error and mischief committed in the name of science—the Holocaust, atom bombs, climate change—but amberize error and mischief committed in the name of faith—“the Crusades, the Inquisition, witch hunts, the European wars of religion,” as Pinker has it. By assuming that the spiritual realm is a fantasy, they irrationally dismiss our experience of it. Our brains perceive the smell of coffee, yet no one argues that coffee isn’t real. But when the same brain perceives the immaterial—morality, the self, or God—it is presumed to be spinning fantasies. Coming from those who worship reason, this is lousy reasoning." https://www.city-journal.org/faith-western-civilization Marquis de Sade - morality without god - "Here at last, however, was an atheist whose outlook made complete logical sense to me from beginning to end. If there is no God, there is no morality. If there is no morality the search for pleasure and the avoidance of pain are all in all and we should pillage, rape, and murder as we please. None of this pale, milquetoast atheism that says “Let’s all do what’s good for society.” What is society to me? None of this elaborate game-theory nonsense where we all benefit from mutual sacrifice and restraint. That only works when no one is looking; then I’ll get away with what I can. If there is no God, there is no good, and sadistic pornography is scripture." - Great Good Thing, Klavan And some excerpts that I took from the article - "...a right-hand path upon which conservative stalwarts position themselves as the last desperate defenders of the heart of the project of Modernity, the so-called “values of Western Civilization,” defending it from the potential failures of progressive social and economic experimentation." "...absolute intolerance of thinking differently — duly papered over with claims to appreciate the right kinds of (limited) diversity." Modern - "A profound respect for the power of reason and the utility and strength of science;" "including individual liberty, which in large, complex societies requires being secured by effective, elite-run institutions." Also, get rid of your non-stick pans, food wrapped in plastic, fish, water resistant cloths, stain resistant carpets, modern technology and go live in a cave. Why Anti-Semitism Is on the Rise in the United States
RobBlair comments on Jan 17, 2020:
Good article except for the thesis. Too bad about the unnecessary lies. I guess that's the only way to get attention on the left - "He verbalizes, encourages, enables, tolerates, winks at, and makes excuses for anti-Semitism, most notably when he said that some of the Nazis marching in Charlottesville in 2017 were “good people.”" "OK. Good. Are we going to take down the statue? Because he was a major slave owner. Now, are we going to take down his statue? So you know what? It’s fine. You’re changing history. You’re changing culture. And you had people, and I’m not talking about the neo-Nazis and the white nationalists, because they should be condemned totally. But you had many people in that group other than neo-Nazis and white nationalists. OK? And the press has treated them absolutely unfairly. Now, in the other group also, you had some fine people, but you also had troublemakers and you see them come with the black outfits and with the helmets and with the baseball bats. You’ve got -- you had a lot of bad -- you had a lot of bad people in the other group…" - Trump https://twitter.com/USAmbIsrael/status/1140284207673090048?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1140333422767824896=https%3A%2F%2Fnews.theceomagazine.com%2Fworld-news%2Ftrumps-heights-unveiled-israeli-pm-netanyahu%2F https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3B48xVUn37M

They pick the ones they want to win and then fabricate them to look good. With lengthy interviews available online, this old snippety emotional format needs to die. If the press likes the candidate, they'll make sure the public never finds out who that person really is. This is who Bernie Sanders is (except for immigration, he hasn't changed) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2O-iLk1G_ng

It'd be kinda funny to mass market a bunch of knock off "gold" pens as Trump Impeachment pens. None of them will work, they'd be inscribed with "Love you Nancy - Putin", and they'd smell like San Francisco homeless shit.

I don't think that article about Trump is true. Facebook is just trying to keep us from fake news. We should spend more time reading about Trump Russia collusion, or Trump's targeting of Biden solely for political gains or even Trump being peed on by porn stars instead of having to deal with fake news. By the way, do you have your Babylon Bee medal on Facebook? I actually love how Snopes and Facebook try to protect us from the "scary" Babylon Bee. The idea that anyone out there would believe CNN would purchase an industrial sized washer machine to 'spin the news' just makes it way more funny. Fake News presents a serious problem when those who imbibe choose to be anesthetized instead of informed. The tolerance of unapologetic liars must end. The killing of the Epstein story and the covering for Weinstein are just two devastating examples of where we are headed if we don't reign in this evil. The US foreign policy is a dyslexic mess because it reflects our voting public. Consider Obama vs Trump regarding the attacks on our embassies. Touch our embassy under Trump and you might suddenly get killed. Under Obama, nothing. There is no reason why the Trump response shouldn't be the defacto US response. Due to the continued abdication of our legislative branch, the executive branch can now perform long term wars, like the one against Libya, without any legislative authorization. I am in favor of long term wars being placed back under the legislative power where a more long term thinking from the Senate will prevade. Of course necessary defensive measures must still be left to the Executive.

I'd like to think that betting on the ignorance of the electorate would be a bad play for a politician's political future but that was not the case in the 2018 or 20 elections. Currently, the polls do not paint a rosy picture for American sanity.
