We need more community. But we need not (and should not IMO) reimpose traditionalism on everyone. Moreover, we should check our aggrievement when young people experiment with new forms of community. Finally, we should consider how our current version of capitalism destroyed old forms of community and discourages new ones. At the end of the day, it is normal for institutions to fade away and be replaced when they cannot adapt to changing social norms. The replacing is the hard part.

There are a few people you mentioned who were called progressives, but the inclusion of the rest seems to be due to their mention in the cultural Marxism conspiracy theory. Moreover, a focus on the idiosyncracies of early progressives is misplaced, because the roots of their politics are much older and less controversial.

WilyRickWiles comments on Jul 27, 2019:
Continued: The defections of major electoral groups from the Democrats had reduced the party to four overlapping social blocs. The first tendency, which was clearly subordinated within the coalition, was the democratic left: African-Americans, Latinos (except Cuban-Americans), feminists, peace activists, liberal trade unionists, environmentalists, welfare-rights and low-income groups, and ideological liberals. In national electoral politics, they were best represented by the Congressional Black Caucus and a small group of white liberals in the House and Senate. To their right was the rump of the old New Deal coalition, the liberal centrists: the AFL-CIO, white ethnics in urban machines, some consumer-goods industrialists and liberal investment bankers, and Jewish organizations. The chief representative of this alignment in national politics was Minnesota senator and former vice president Hubert Humphrey. Following Humphrey’s death in 1977, his protégé, Walter Mondale, assumed leadership of this bloc. A third tendency, which exhibited the most independent posture toward partisan politics, comprised what some have called the “professional managerial class” and sectors of the white, salaried middle-income strata. These white “neo-liberals” tended to oppose US militarism abroad and large defense expenditures. But on economic policies, they tended toward fiscal conservatism and a reduction of social-welfare programs. They were critical of nuclear power, and favored federal regulations to protect the environment; but they also opposed “special interests” such as organized labor. This constituency was behind the unsuccessful presidential campaigns of Morris Udall in 1976 and John Anderson in 1980. Its principal spokesman in the Democratic primaries was Colorado senator Gary Hart, who as early as 1973 had proclaimed that “American liberalism was near bankruptcy.” At the extreme right of the party were those moderate-to-conservative southern Democrats who had not yet defected from the party, and a smaller number of midwestern and “sunbelt” governors and legislators who had ties to small regional capitalists, energy interests, and middle-income white constituencies. The most prominent stars of this tendency in the 1970s were Jimmy Carter, Florida governor Reubin Askew, millionaire Texas senator Lloyd Bentsen, and Ohio senator John Glenn. All of these groups, in varying degrees, opposed the general agenda of the Reagan administration. But only the democratic left, and most specifically the African-American community, mounted a sustained series of social protests against literally every initiative of the Republican president. Mondale quickly rounded up establishment support, winning over the AFL-CIO early, as well as most leaders in the...

This looks like PR. Regardless, I don't think the point is to "slow down or control the pace of change." The point is to combat monopoly, monopsony, and the economic and social problems inherently caused by such concentrated power. There are a few natural approaches to take: 1. Undo mergers and break up units (e.g., Youtube, Google Search, G Suite, etc.), 2. Standardize and decentralize platforms (e.g., Facebook, Uber, and Apple's App Store), and 3. Nationalize (e.g., using a social wealth fund) monopsonies like Amazon that can't easily be broken up and have achieved desirable efficiencies.

The article (pasted due to the paywall): America’s new redneck rebellion West Virginians are embracing an anti-corporate populism that can veer left as well as right Edward Luce in Charleston, West Virginia JUNE 26, 2019 When West Virginia’s schoolteachers went on strike last year, the state’s history flared back to life.  The teachers donned red bandanas in honour of the early 20th-century miners who wore the garments in their infamous pitched battles with coal operators. The strikers of the so-called mine wars thus acquired the name “rednecks”. The label meant something very different then than it does today — the red of workers’ blood, rather than poor white prejudice. These days West Virginia is better known for its “deplorables”, an epithet Hillary Clinton ill-advisedly used to describe half of Donald Trump’s supporters in the 2016 campaign. Though Clinton meant the term more generally, West Virginia took it personally, giving Trump his second-largest margin of victory after Wyoming.  There was a time, however, when West Virginia was the most radical state in the union. “We went ‘red’ because we wanted to hearken back to what West Virginia once was,” says Jay O’Neal, a teacher based in the state capital of Charleston, who organised the strike with fellow teacher Emily Comer over chronically low pay and the declining quality of health insurance. The historical origin of the term redneck is often traced to poor white cotton farmers sunburned from working the fields — “po whites”, in the words of black slaves. Nowadays, a redneck is generally taken to be racist. There are still plenty of those. West Virginia’s miner rednecks, though, were a multiracial group.  African-American and Italian immigrant “scabs”, who had been moved in by the coal owners to replace the striking Appalachian miners, were invited to join the illegal United Mine Workers union. They accepted. According to local activists, as the 10,000-strong integrated army marched towards a showdown with the coal owners’ private army, the strikers desegregated whites-only public spaces at gunpoint.  Barring the US civil war, the 1921 battle of Blair Mountain was the largest armed insurrection in American history. Dozens of lives were lost, with private planes even hired to drop bombs on American citizens. It was also a milestone in desegregated labour history. Unlike West Virginia’s teachers, who took nine days to win last year’s strike, West Virginia’s miners lost their battle. They had to wait for the presidency of Franklin Delano Roosevelt 12 years later for the right to organise. A century on, that redneck spirit is stirring again. In 2018, there were more strikes in America than in any year since ...

And we have a two party system. Only way for a third party to win is to displace one of the two. That takes a political movement. And as I preciously commented, there just aren't enough right libertarians. Alternatively, you could push for ranked choice voting so that people aren't throwing their vote away when they vote for a third party. For funsies you might encourage Justin Amash to run for President. Also, they would never be a Democrat because they are economically right-wing. A left libertarian, a.k.a. an anarchist or libertarian socialist could of course be a Democrat, but they are more likely to be involved in efforts for workplace democracy than electoral politics. Bernie's the closest thing to that right now.

Haven't watched the video (I don't trust O'Keefe but do support breaking up or nationalizing parts of the big tech companies), but it strikes me that the screenshots could just be a function of people's average search activity. The suggested queries about men strike me as things that conservative men would be concerned about and then search for on Google, perhaps constituting most searches about men. The suggested queries about women, on the other hand, strike me as things that feminists would be concerned about and then search for, likewise constituting most searches about women. Maybe this isn't a conspiracy but rather an algorithm outputting accurate but awkward results.

Thank goodness for those liberals, huh. Rule of law at its best!

It's their civic duty. Not unlike what happens when we shirk jury duty or go AWOL from the military. Happened in Wisconsin in response to Scott Walker's union busting and it has almost happened recently in other states except the lawmakers got out of dodge before threats could be made. And in this case it sounds like there will be many attempts at persuasion before any force is used. (EDIT: Looks like they're already in Idaho, so I'm guessing the Dems will persue a compromise). What's really a dangerous norm-violation is the response by vigilantes. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quorum#Call_of_the_house https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quorum#Quorum-busting In Oregon, here are the laws governing this process: From the Oregon constitution: "If a quorum is present, the Senate shall proceed with the transaction of business. When there is no quorum present, a lesser number of members may adjourn from day to day and compel the attendance of absent members." From ORS 181.050: "The state police, with the approval of the Governor, may be called upon by any other branch or department of the state government to enforce criminal laws or any regulation of such branch or department."

I’ve been asked (in the Culture War group) if I reject the ideas of “dignitity”and “honor”...
WilyRickWiles comments on Jun 24, 2019:
But are you rejecting the concepts out of hand or after having read the attached article? Your usage of the words dignity and honor suggests the former. That's fine, you don't have to be interested in learning more about the concepts. And I probably should have provided more context. But these are concepts that a figure of the IDW has expounded upon to explain his differences with elements of the right and left. I would have thought that this community would have been more interested and prepared to engage those ideas. I'm worried that you are going to excommunicate him just as you did Bari Weiss and (provisionally) Jordan Peterson. With Dave Rubin's recent troubles, pretty soon there may be no one left!

**This Oregon situation ... cuts straight to a visceral level issue of leftwing fascism versus right wing libertarianism.** Not really. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quorum#Call_of_the_house https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quorum#Quorum-busting Remember when Scott Walker did this? No, he's a chauvinist in the general sense. But he's pretty aligned with the IDW on Muslims and transgender people.
