@Bay0Wulf False semantic point aside, the word republic derives from "common wealth," and as Trump's pandemic response has demonstrated, your party's platform and governance fail to meet that standard as well. We don't need "free lollipops," but there are things that everyone needs for survival and that serve the public good.

@SpikeTalon Well, it's relevant because the people in the caravan may be proven instigators of violence. Doesn't seem like a whole lot this time. I voted for La Riva though, in a blue state, and some will vote Hawkins.
WilyRickWiles replies on Oct 24, 2020:
@TheHerrDark They didn't vote because the parties, especially the Democrats (who used to be the party of the working class), don't offer anything to the working class and young people. It's in their interest but to offer anything if they can get away with it.
Are we living in a communist America?

As much as you'd love to distort reality, Trump is still Trump, and Biden is still Biden. Fascists and neoliberals love their fantasies, but most people know who these people are.

Since when the word "diversity" has become like a taboo word?
Naomi comments on Oct 23, 2020:
What is your understanding of "diversity"? @TheMiddleway, @Crikey, @N0DD, @BlurtReynolds, @WilyRickWiles, @JacksonNought, and anyone who is left-leaning/centric. Sorry to tag you. I have this terrible habit of not settling with one side of an argument. I like to be aware of both sides of the ...
WilyRickWiles replies on Oct 23, 2020:
There are some good things about diversity. We live in a diverse world (and I live in a diverse city and country) and participate in a global economic system, so there is value in having diverse perspectives represented in its institutions, and enough inclusion to make different groups of people comfortable in a workplace. Moreover, the population of qualified young people in the workforce is quite diverse where I live (and there are some slums), so on that level it is a matter of merit. Diversity does not necessarily equate to equity or justice, however, because it might not be at all levels of power, might not be representative of a population, might not correct for past harms, might paper over ongoing harms, might require everyone to conform to the norms of white cisgender (pardon the jargon) heterosexuals, and might not correct unjust systems. That is why diversity remains popular among neoliberals, but many on the left are calling for "more than diversity." I think of a past employer that held diversity, equity, and inclusion trainings and had a department dedicated to that subject, but leadership remained disproportionately white and male, different rules applied to leadership, and at the first sign of economic trouble, they would shut down that department and disproportionately lay off women and people of color. I think of the polluter or payday lender that adds a few people of color to their C-suite. I think of the diverse urban planners in my city whose interests align with mine (as a leftist with working class roots) but where decisions still end up aligning with the interests of wealthy, conservative old white men. I think of the neoliberals who use identity politics as a cudgel against the left but don't do anything to change systems or the people at the top, and don't do anything for working class people of color (or any working class people for that matter). I think of the relative handful of poor people of color who are selected to receive elite educational and employment opportunities, who jump through all of the traditionally honorable hoops, and become frustrated and disillusioned when they can't manage to get the system to work better for people like them (or any poor people for that matter).

WilyRickWiles replies on Oct 23, 2020:
@WftRight He was the 1st investor in Facebook, currently its #7 shareholder (2.5% or $2.5 billion in shares), and a board member. Moreover, he is a billionaire venture capitalist who co-founded Paypal and Palantir. He is a Trump supporter, a major right-wing donor, and spoke at the 2016 RNC. He operates in social circles with key members of the alt right. Eric Weinstein, a member of the IDW (he even coined the term), manages his hedge fund. I believe he got conservative Joel Kaplan (VP of Public Policy) hired, and Kaplan has advocated for right-wing media like Breitbart and hired Tucker Carlson's The Daily Caller as a fact checker. I'd love to have criminal complaints filed against both of them!

I still have no idea what anyone here is talking about. Are you saying Americans would be out of line to study and form policy based on the history of slavery, Jim Crow, redlining, ethnic cleansing, obstruction of civil rights legislation, neoliberalism, and other discrimination? Establishment politicians and their pet philosophers virtue signal all the time, but it sounds like you are making a broader criticism of the substantial remediation of racist systems.

WilyRickWiles replies on Oct 20, 2020:
@Naomi My thought when it comes to this sort of thing is that racism doesn't hurt many people in a vacuum. A tradition in a small, very white town in England, or a ingrained racial hierarchy in a white community in the panhandle of Florida don't hurt many. But when they are exploited by national leaders for the purposes of colonialism or ethnic cleansing, then they become a big problem. It's clearly a problem in the US, moreover systemic problems were never solved, but I won't speak for the UK.
