Or the 17th Amendment which allowed for direct election of Senators. Or civil rights legislation like the Voting Rights Act. Never mind the Great Society. You make it sounds like you'd actually support a restoration of Reconstruction, but we both know that's a lie. You are equating the conservative Dixiecrats who founded the KKK with John Lewis, the left, and the modern (liberal) Democratic Party, just because they have the same team label. There are of course differences between leftists and liberals (cf. Dr. King's criticism of the white moderate, which definitely applies to neoliberal members of both parties, including Biden), but you are making the outrageous claim that conservative Republicans deserve credit for being on the correct side of civil rights. That type of Republican didn't exist until Goldwater, who I will write more about below. The Radical Republicans who pushed for Reconstruction were LEFTISTS! Republican KKK members became governor and ran state party organizations in Indiana and Colorado during the second KKK! My (progressive) Republican great great grandmother fought them. LBJ, Northern Democrats, and Rockefeller (liberal) Republicans voted for the Civil Rights Act. Goldwater (a conservative) and the Dixiecrats voted against it, and the former soon got the political realignment he sought. Thurmond became a Republican when he endorsed Goldwater who was the Republican candidate for President that year. I and most people I know were Republicans until recent decades. The reverse is true of white Southerners. Face the inconvenient facts! Even @Thaw knows these things are true, because he is an out white supremacist.

Do you know what legal segregation means? I don't care if you weren't raised racist--it's irrelevant to a discussion of John Lewis's life and the relevant American history.

@A1fredo No, I thought you had an ask for me as an individual, but it turns out you just want the left to spontaneously organize around the issue. You minimized the cost of organizing yet refuse to do any organizing or research yourself!

@A1fredo Here's the thing. It doesn't take a lot of research to find the answer to that question. But it's a matter of mutual trust. You want to work with an organization whose ideals you understand and whose members your trust. Likewise, I don't want to send you to an organization I trust, when I don't know yet if I can trust you. So do your homework. It will require learning more about the real left, not just the caricature that the right shows you.

@A1fredo The left cares about justice for Palestine and we haven't protested en masse, and Israel isn't nearly as powerful as China. Moreover, we are more likely to have an impact on foreign policy if we focus on influencing politics at home. It's about cost/benefit and priorities.

And FreedomWorks’ organizers utilized and spread the Alinsky gospel as they traveled the country last year helping newly engaged tea party activists set up their own groups." These are the folks who led the recent "reopen" protests! "O’Keefe, who had received — and later led — training on using Alinsky’s Rules against the left, said his videos were based on the book."
