I've found a few of their stories to be fair and well-written. They may be misused sometimes, but I think the point is to have more of a deterrent to discourage vigilante violence like lynchings and counter the chilling effect other hate crimes have on communities. Kind of like the crime of "terrorism," which has also been misused. And gun control laws are a type of regulation that may have all sorts of motivations. One of those is curbing gun violence--which I'm not sure is a great analogy to what we're discussing.
