Steph Sterling is vice president of advocacy and policy at the Roosevelt Institute, and co-author of the forthcoming paper “In the Public Interest: Democratizing Medicines through Public Ownership.” The coronavirus has laid bare the failures of our costly, inefficient, market-based system for developing, researching and manufacturing medicines and vaccines. COVID-19 is one of several coronavirus outbreaks we have seen over the past 20 years, yet the logic of our current system—a range of costly government incentives intended to stimulate private-sector development—has resulted in the 18-month window we now anticipate before widespread vaccine availability. Private pharmaceutical firms simply will not prioritize a vaccine or other countermeasure for a future public health emergency until its profitability is assured, and that is far too late to prevent mass disruption. The reality of fragile supply chains for active pharmaceutical ingredients coupled with public outrage over patent abuses that limit the availability of new treatments has led to an emerging, bipartisan consensus that the public sector must take far more active and direct responsibility for the development and manufacture of medicines. That more efficient, far more resilient government approach will replace our failed, 40-year experiment with market-based incentives to meet essential health needs."

WilyRickWiles comments on Mar 16, 2020:
They've been doing it since 2008 with no trouble. The entire developed world is suffering from stagnation due to an aging population. The US has suffered less because of immigration and superpower status (diverse economy, powerful military, and reserve currency). Quantitative easing and fiscal policy have stimulated some demand, warding off stagnation, and if anything have protected us from deflation like Japan has suffered from. I wouldn't be worried about stagflation, especially in the absence of a supply shock in raw materials (not money). The coronavirus pandemic and OPEC policy are causing a decrease in demand at the same time that there is an increase in supply. Deficit spending remains low as a percentage of GDP, taxes remain low, and QE doesn't really get money into the real economy. Banks still need to make loans and employers still need to raise wages. If there is to be a real direct stimulus in the short-term, it's likely to pass through to grocery stores and landlords rather than generate any serious demand.

Voters in this age bracket averaged just a 43 percent turnout rate between 1976 and 2016, compared to the 65 percent turnout rate of voters over age 25 and the nearly 80 percent turnout rate of the oldest cohort. Indeed, turnout remains relatively low for all voters under 40. The population pyramid and the voting population pyramid have in many ways become inverted. This is what’s allowed silent voters and boomer voters to make up the majority of the electorate, even though they represent a smaller portion of the country’s overall population. All told, there are 160 million prospective millennial and Gen Z voters out there; they represent a reservoir of potential Democratic voters who, as a simple question of math, must inevitably overtake the aging, white, and conservative one. But this wishful liberal talking point has consistently failed to account for the strong patterns of political behavior within each voting demographic. In their rosy 2002 prediction of inevitable Democratic dominance, for example, Ruy Teixeira and John B. Judis overlooked pervasively low voter turnout rates within the Democrats’ modern coalition of lower-income, minority, and younger voters. While Republican turnout proves to be more steady across election cycles, Democratic turnout fluctuates wildly between presidential and midterm elections, as well as between state-level and national-level elections. That’s one key reason that the Obama coalition vanished from the electoral scene almost as rapidly as it emerged as a potential major political force. The consequences of this crash were readily apparent just two years into Obama’s presidency, with the Democrats’ devastating losses in the 2010 midterms. In that disaster, Democrats sacrificed 63 House seats; in 2014, they went on to lose nine Senate seats (and their majority in that chamber). Democrats carried 57 percent of independents in the 2006 midterms, but just 37 percent in the 2010 midterms—pretty much changing places with their Republican counterparts in the independent camp over that four-year span. The GOP dominated independents in 2014 as well. But here’s something you almost never hear an analyst say about independents: Although they are important to election outcomes, they are a necessary, but by no means sufficient, element in a successful electoral strategy. Even though we commonly assume that independents make up roughly a third of the electorate, the pool of persuadable independents is actually quite small, just 7 percent of the total electorate, according to the Pew Research Center’s most recent analysis. This is because most independents admit to being ...

The left and right have similar criticisms, different scapegoats, and different prescriptions. The current center is that professional managerial class that uses identity politics cynically. A real center would be economically left and socially toward the right (see Bannon, Tucker, and Tulsi), but that is a non-starter for the left because it means throwing minorites under the bus.
So I was halfway thru my psych degree when I came across the ideas of the IDW/heterodox thinkers.
WilyRickWiles comments on Feb 11, 2020:
Psychology attempts to address real, immediate human problems with an incomplete foundation of scientific knowledge. Sometimes the world outside academia distorts its ideas for broader political ends, whether "SJW" or IDW, or even advertising. And sometimes ideas from social science influence the culture they describe. I've found it useful to understand gender theory, for example, because it provides language to describe and discuss phenomena in the world. I'd stick with it. Try to understand, critically but in good faith, and separately engage the "SJW"/IDW discourse. Learn the history of how and why the social sciences developed and be suspicious of conspiracy theories. But also think about why you're entering this profession and what you want to accomplish in your career.
I'm sure this time will pass, but it sure is annoying.
