@Facci Libertarian socialists (anarchists) have always opposed state power. Democratic socialists have been more pragmatic. I prefer to use the state when something is already concentrated with clear efficiencies that benefit the public (e.g. Amazon and the Federal Reserve), is a public good, or is something the state is already involved in (and grassroots power or the public imagination is not ready), and otherwise to break up and democratize (esp. Facebook).

@Dmwils How can there be competition with Facebook when network effects lock us all in. How can there be competition with Amazon when it controls the market? Not to mention that both of them have the resources to pick off any potential competitors. As for Google, it's perhaps not as serious as the former two, but it is still hard to escape them because they control much of the ad market and one of the two major smart phone platforms. These are not how markets are supposed to operate.

First off, you used as your example one of the most charitable billionaires. Aside from him and one or two others, I give at a higher rate, and so do most Americans. So I think that if they hadn't hoarded as much wealth from their companies, a lot more Americans would have more wealth which not only would improve their standard of living, but increase the total amount of money given to charity. Moreover, giving to charity and paying taxes are not mutually exclusive. Finally, from my perspective, the purpose of increasing taxes on billionaires is to decrease inequality. Once your wealth becomes that large, it can only really be used in pursuit of more power at the expense of democracy. Democracy is imperfect, but it is better than the alternatives. We must engage civically so that the government addresses our priorities. And it should be constrained not by revenue but by inflation and some percentage of growth.

@jamesjohn There's no serious disagreement about the dismissal of the prosecutor. The election influence theory is completely bonkers. No, this was just about getting some foreign leaders to make statements that could be used as propaganda in the election. Never mind how problematic it is to illegally hold up aid in order to coerce them and to involve your personal lawyer! As for the conflict of interest, the fact is that as bad as it was (and I hope that's enough to sink Biden in the primary), it was not illegal and did not influence Biden's actions. Moreover, if it was so serious, why didn't the Republicans investigate it at the time?

The electorate is very polarized, particularly along the urban/suburban and rural divide, and pure independents make up only about 7%. Much hinges on whether the enthusiasm of the Democratic base nears that of the smaller Republican one. Trump has done the Democrats' job for them since the midterms and they will probably win in 2020 regardless of who they nominate. But from 2022 forward, candidates like Bernie who motivate left-leaning independents--i.e. younger generations, people of color, the (multicultural) working class, and women--are key. https://www.people-press.org/2019/03/14/political-independents-who-they-are-what-they-think https://cnu.edu/wasoncenter/2019/07/01-2020-election-forecast/ https://twitter.com/RachelBitecofer https://www.people-press.org/2019/08/16/most-democrats-are-excited-by-several-2020-candidates-not-just-their-top-choice/pp_2019-08-16_2020-democratic-candidates_0-06-2
