@Boardwine It's unfortunate that you must resort to projecting your inadequacies on me. It must be hard not to be the breadwinner in your family. You probably feel like no one gives you the respect you think your deserve--and your wife's profession is a stark juxtaposition. As a leftist, one thing I know for certain is that patronage--or perhaps I should say matronage--is no substitute for true agency, even if you rationalize your role as part of some sort of Christian dominionst project.

@DanielEvans Erdogan could take his licensing agreement away. "He's already committed to being first POTUS to leave high political office poorer than when he entered." No he has not. Just because he's not taking a salary does not mean he has committed to losing money while President. Campaigning is even more expensive than being President and here's what he had to say on that: "It’s very possible that I could be the first presidential candidate to run and make money on it." It's very easy to make money when you stay at your own properties whenever you travel using money from campaign donors, for example. Not to mention the foreign officials doing so to win favor with him.

@Boardwine What I'd like to know now is why I am paying more to the government per dollar issued by the government, why the programs funded by payroll taxes are more dependent on lower income taxpayers, why wages have stagnated, why we are incentivizing massive intergenerational wealth transfers including to foundations, why we are incentivizing capital accumulation in foundations and corporations, why we are incentivizing the type of wealth that can only be used for power's sake, and why we are lowering wealthy taxes at a time when their expensive tastes are increasingly defining public life. These are people used to freebies and we're indulging them. Keeping elite universities small with expensive-to-maintain buildings and catering mostly to their descendants, for example, is the kind of thing we are encouraging.

@george The only reason people ever thought Maher was a liberal was because he was mostly socially liberal (but not so much on trans people) and he was against the Iraq war (he's not broadly anti-war though, especially when it comes to Israel) at a time when that was very politically polarizing. Regarding Biden you have been gobbling up the propaganda the right is feeding you. Biden represented the openly communicated interests of the US and its allies by calling for the firing of a prosecutor who was blocking the investigation of Burisma, the company Hunter Biden was lobbying for. If you didn't catch that, that was against the interest of Hunter. Hunter got nothing but a salary out of it. Yes lobbying is bad, and we should put an end to it, and Joe's conflict of interest looked bad at the time, but you have the story exactly backward.

@Zbacku, as I said then: Under Obama, older children were detained when they came here alone until they could make arrangements with an adult in the US (which they generally already had planned out). Under Trump, they started unnecessarily detaining asylees, requiring their young children, who aren't as capable of navigating the legal system and don't know other adults in the US, to be detained. This caused a huge spike in children detainees, overtaxing the system. They knew full well that would be the consequence and did so anyway, intending it to be a deterrent (it wasn't).

The real corruption you refer to is of the legal lobbying sort--i.e. Hunter Biden. And I'd love if we lived in a world where that sort of thing were illegal and investigated. But Trump is not going after Hunter. He's going after Joe, inexplicably, for acting against Hunter's lobbying interest! Hunter got nothing but his paycheck and Joe got nothing out of the decision--he was acting in interest of the United States and its allies, as demonstrated by other officials at the time. Trump is using his office to try to twist the arms of foreign officials to lend credibility to an otherwise baseless propaganda narrative.

I do think that it is probably more politically harmful that it is incisive. Here's the problem: it was the scientist's joke, not the LaRouchie's. And the right is laughing at the LaRouchie (while simultaneously taking her literally as a constituent) and taking the scientist literally (and representative of all climate change activists).

@pbuck0145 That's not what I'm doing. Your version of secularism, and I'm guessing you're not a secularist, restricts what people can do in their private lives, broadly speaking. Mine restricts what the government can do. And I'm guessing Jagmeet and the NDP, as well as most secularists, are closer to my definition. I mean don't just trust me because I'm a secularist, trust my definition because it's enshrined in the constitution of an important country. So your criticism is off the mark.

@iThink Who exactly is "shutting down" comedians? It's kind of similar to the state the jokes I did see were in a year or so before when I saw him emcee a concert. Regardless, I believe in giving comedians a lot of leeway (my exception would be for comedians like Carlos Mencia who in his time basically just existed to give unsophisticated young white people an excuse to be racist). But again, I do not think you all know why you think this LaRouche's stunt is funny.

Maybe my bearings are off being from the US. As you're probably aware, our Constitution mandates a separation of church and state--meaning basically that you're free to do whatever you want privately as long as you don't try to impose your beliefs and practices on the public, e.g. in government (never mind that the Republicans pretend that it doesn't exist). So that's the frame through which I see this. A person's body and the clothing that it wears is pretty obviously a private matter. And I don't imagine the NDP is imposing religious beliefs and practices on the public.
