@iThink Not really a gotcha when it doesn't trip up AOC, is a reference to a remark by some random scientist who was trying to be provocative, and was motivated by the LaRouche organization's belief that climate change activism is a conspiracy by the Queen of England (and probably the Jews). In fact, it's more revealing of the right than anything else. They were tricked into thinking that the LaRouchie was actually one of AOC's constituents, that the LaRouchie was being sincere, and that the random scientist was being sincere. Not very sophisticated of the right unless you guys are just acting in bad faith--which certainly wouldn't surprise me!

I work and pay my taxes as a partner in a small start up business. At the moment, I make about as much as I did when I worked a 9-5, which is to say a fairly average professional wage. Currently, I spend about $400 a month on high deductible health insurance. I'm in good health, so I never use my insurance. In fact, I've hardly used it in more than a decade. But I want to be covered without caps if I get cancer or get hit by a bus so that I don't go bankrupt and die. Short-term, catastrophic insurance doesn't do that. I pay all dental costs out of pocket. It would be nice to either get some actual health care or pay less. I'd also like there to be a health care system that could accommodate people who are hurt on the job and illegally fired by their employer because their desperation to settle with no income coming in will be cheaper than increased workers compensation premiums. Moreover, the wealthy have effectively stolen the wage gains of average Americans over the past several decades. It won't be the end of the world if they have to pay a little bit more. But again, I work and pay my taxes and premiums. That's not taking.

@iThink Nope, not if the data is encrypted on the user's device, in transport (through the ISP), on Facebook's servers, and on the recipient's device, especially if only sender and recipient can decrypt the data, as would be the case with the kind of messaging in question. All of this, of course, depends on trusting Facebook. Barr wants them to put in a backdoor so that the government can decrypt anyone's messages, whether on device or intercepted.

Awkward language. I think they are trying to make a few points: 1. The IRS used to audit the wealthiest at a higher rate, 2. The wealthy either have more incorrect returns or their mistakes and fraud add up to much more lost revenue, and 3. The mistakes that the poor make are relatively minor and unintentional and they are more harmed by an audit.
