GOP Racial Gerrymandering Mastermind Participated in Redistricting in More States Than Previously ...
george comments on Sep 23, 2019:
Maybe if the left wing would quit voting for anyone who labels theirself as a democrat and actually voted for principled people who would fight back, things like gerrymandering would not even be spoken about. The left is just as guilty as the right on this one IMO.
WilyRickWiles replies on Sep 23, 2019:
@george It's harder in the primary for sure with more serious candidates in the race. He has a high floor like Trump does--but hopefully a higher ceiling. And his supporters should keep him in the primary for the long haul. Will be interesting to see what happens in the first three states. If it ends up being Warren, I guess the best we can hope is that she betrays her class (for its own good) like FDR. I'm still hopeful that any of the top candidates can take on Trump. Biden has to go though.

@george Yeah, I was pretty mad at Obama early on until the Tea Party scared me back into the fold. Hell even Larry Summers wanted to give us a better bailout (people rather than banks). After he let Rahm disband and co-opt his outside game (OFA), the health care public option and the rest of his agenda were toast. But of course I expect better going forward. Obama signaled left populist compared to Hillary, but that probably just never was who he was (though he's still great for a center-left politician). I'm supporting Bernie, but Warren seems to recognize the need for an outside game as much as he does, even if she won't be the one running it. And she understands the inside game better than anyone. Sadly, it's unlikely we'll see a moral foreign policy anytime soon. Beyond that, the Senate, judges, and local governments are likely to remain a pain in the ass. Would love to see outside movements and unions grow. And I hope we get some democracy reform.

I don't see the Dems in court over and over again for racial gerrymanders. They have a few questionable districts in the country as a whole, but it's nothing compared to the GOP. Not saying they wouldn't gerrymander more if they had the chance. But the establishment is asleep at the wheel. Of course, some of it has to do with how these things are funded. Donors like the Kochs have created a whole party infrastructure separate from the GOP that does this sort of thing. Nothing comparable exists inside or outside of the Democratic Party, and Democratic donors are more interested in things that stroke their egos (e.g. Tom Steyer). But the progressive base has woken up to how the game is being manipulated. I would expect Bernie or Warren to tackle such democracy reforms. Even Buttigieg has been saying the right thing on the matter, but I don't trust him. Of course, the Senate may not be receptive even if the Dems miraculously acquire a majority in 2020.

WilyRickWiles replies on Sep 23, 2019:
@JimbobNE The dollar amount of the debt is not that meaningful IMO. What is the risk if the economy is growing on average and deficit spending is kept around a reasonable percentage of GDP (e.g. 4%)? Moreover, economic conditions are similar among all developed countries and inflation is basically nonexistent. QE proved printing as much as 20% of GDP doesn't change that. That buys (and did buy) a lot of debt without really increasing the kind of money that would bid up prices for food, housing, fuel, and consumer products. And Clinton's surplus arguably caused a recession. Beyond that, I think we get into the debate of whether capitalism is viable in the long-term. It probably isn't, but without a replacement we and the rest of the world probably have bigger things than the national debt to worry about when it dies.

@iThink Surveys show that the politics of young people are diametrically opposed to those of older people. And because of the baby boom and increasing life expectancy, older generations have had a longer than usual time in the driver's seat. Moreover, they have radicalized as they aged, and now that young people roughly equal them in number, they are changing the rules of of the game to extend their power. Laws are being passed throughout the country to give even more disproportionate power to conservative areas and institutions, and a new set of theocratic and corporate-friendly judges has filled the judiciary, who will control our politics for at least another two decades. Assumptions that young people grew up with are being undone as the gains of the civil rights movement and new deal are unwound. Millennials who are in their mid thirties today can expect to be in the driver's seat in their 60s, if they're lucky. Add to that the Democratic Party's own suppression of its grassroots, and it kinda makes you want to become a communist!

WilyRickWiles replies on Sep 19, 2019:
@iThink If there was something else going on, it didn't involve Augustus. He just happened to walk down the street (he's a barber in the neighborhood) while they were there, some talking to a resident. If you haven't watched all of them, the link I provided has more than one video on it that you might find interesting--e.g., the second to last one--that show different aspects of the available video and audio, and attempt to reconstruct the rest of what was said and done. It's particularly interesting to watch the video that is available of the officers after the shooting, as they start to construct a narrative to make sense of what just happened. I'm not sure if it's fair to characterize Augustus as "fighting and resisting." The officers flagged him down because they noticed he had a gun. One officer immediately drew his weapon. He stopped and calmly talked with another officer and began to produce his FOID card when yet another officer attempted to grab his arm to arrest him without any warning. Her grabbing ultimately uncovered the gun on his hip. He panicked and ran, with his wallet in one hand, and was thrown off balance by the obstacles in his way. Contrary to the police report, he then touched, but didn't draw his gun--arguably to secure it--and was immediately shot dead, in the back.

@iThink The thing that seems to have escalated this situation is that one officer, who was new, grabbed at him (against policy) even though they were previously just talking about his FOID, which he was producing for them. The officer who killed Augustus also drew his gun very early.

@iThink I was speaking generally, but yes some of those elements are present here. The officer drew his gun immediately rather than using time, space, and words to deescalate the situation, as policy recommends. There has been no review, but the city police oversight office has made public criticisms. False reports began within seconds of the shooting, with an officer reporting on his radio that a police officer had been shot (no shots were fired and no guns were drawn by anyone other than the officer who killed Augustus). The police reports that followed also contained falsehoods. When the police department did release evidence publicly, they were very selective. Then when a judge ordered them to release all of the audio and video evidence in response to a FOIA lawsuit, they withheld a dashcam video. That video just came out, over a year later in response to more FOIA requests. They have yet to release several other videos of the event.

And I think it is very important to study why and how these decisions to shoot, which go against CPD policy, are made, and how they can be prevented. Moreover, it's just as important to study why and which police make false reports, withhold evidence, interfere with investigations, and retaliate against whistleblowers. Not to mention distortion by the police union and preferential treatment by prosecutors and judges.

That's being precise, not "conflicting." I'm glad someone did the work to collect these facts in one place and hold the President to account on his typically hyperbolic promises.

Rehab houses in distressed neighborhoods and stop developers from buying their way out of affordable housing requirements so that there are options across the city--including good neighborhoods with healthy public schools and other institutions. The latter is part of a pattern of scorched earth politics by North Carolina, and increasingly national, Republicans. When they don't get their way, they change the system. Most Democrats, meanwhile are hesitant to follow suit for the sake of "civility."
