It has to either be a ramjet or a solid rocket. Stratolaunch is Mach 0.9 The SR-71 blackbird engine is a hybrid that can transition from turbofan to ramjet, so it can be launched from Mach 0. The blackbird can reach Mach 3.3. The limitation isn't the engines. It's fuselage temperature, windows, and cooling the cabin. A drone ramjet can easily reach Mach 5. Everyone has Mach 5 ramjet missiles. Ramjets top out at Mach 5, hence they are the best possible launch platform for a space rocket, until hypersonic engines are mastered. A ground rocket has lots of engines because it needs bigly thrust, at least 2.5 g's. For the SpaceX Falcon-9, the rockets are 1/3 of the cost. A rocket launched from the air doesn't need big thrust because it can take its time getting to orbit speed. Wings can provide lift as it rises out of the atmosphere. Such a rocket doesn't need many engines. Solid rockets have larger thrust/mass than a liquid rocket. If you can get away with solid rockets for the first stage, then solid rockets give you yuge thrust. Ramjets are easy. It should be easy to build a ramjet launch vehicle. Launching from a Mach 5 ramjet is such a big help that it enables reaching orbit with cheap solid rockets, and you only need 2 stages. A hypersonic aircraft can reach Mach 15. The only defense against a hypersonic missile is a faster hypersonic missile. America should be working hard developing hypersonics. A big part of hypersonics is supercomputer simulations. We need a yuge supercomputer for hypersonics. The Roman Republic had a mechanism for balancing the tradeoff between government power and individual liberty. It had two modes: senate mode and dictator mode. It was usually in senate mode, and the constitution was rich in checks and balances. Most offices were elected, had a term of 1 year and couldn't be repeated. The Senate had the power to appoint a dictator. On occasion Rome was in dicator mode, and this was necessary because if they hadn't been, invaders would have conquered them. The dictator tended to be a fellow who was renowned for winning. Upon winning the war the dictator would resign and Rome would return to senate mode. Cincinnatus was appointed dictator because Rome was about to be conquered. Cincinnatus defeated the invaders and resigned the dictatorship 15 days after being appointed. He returned to his farm. Back in the day, most retiring American presidents returned to their farms. I propose an amendment to the American constitution: Retiring presidents must farm. There may be instances where it's good to let rich people run government. At present, campaign money goes to advertising firms and media networks, not the peasants. Make the politicians spend money on the peasants. For example, offer a rich person a term as mayor if he drops 10 million dollars in the city treasury. Watchdog him, of course, but let him use the office to help his businesses, otherwise he won't drop the donation. Just make sure that his profits are less than his donation. If he donates 10 mil and makes 5 mil, the city wins. Treat the rich mayor like a celebrity. Make him feel welcome. Name a street after him. Want another term? You can have it if you drop another 10 mil.
