Quillette. "Is Democracy Compatible With Extreme Inequality?" [twitter.com]
timon_phocas comments on Feb 10, 2020:
George Washington was the wealthiest man in America when he led the country in the Revolution and during his presidency. Andrew Jackson was a wealthy planter when he overturned the "deep state" establishment of his day when he won election in 1828. Both were champions of democracy.
The democrats have made guns an impossibly divisive issue.

Buckley and Reagan made conservatism creditable, Rush identified it with the mainstream of American thought; the way we lived our lives and dreams.

His observations about California's leftist slide (and by extension, America's) resonate with my memories. His observations are elegantly stated and draw upon his deep historical knowledge. He illuminates patterns in history that allow us to see them play out in current events.

So they couldn't pay taxes, and they couldn't even work as laborers. The Senatorial class became immensely wealthy. The Plebians became a class of beggers and welfare recipients. Sound familiar?

I think we're struggling because there's a confusion between tools, techniques and philosophy. I have found no "fascist philosophy" as such in my readings. State control over media, pervasive propaganda, propagandistic education, pervasive secret police, concentration camp systems. It's like a buffet caudillos can choose from. It's almost like we can say fascism is any totalitarian movement that is not communist.

How Seriously Should Trump Take North Korea's 13,000 Artillery Pieces? [news.yahoo.com]
timon_phocas comments on Jan 15, 2020:
It's old, half-century old, technology. It's in caves, hidden behind armored doors. The idea is they'll pop out, shoot. Then pop back in to reload. There are thousands of artillery pieces. Seoul is within their range. Theoretically, it's a terrifying threat. Some qualifiers... The NorK army is starving and spends most of its time scavenging for food rather than training. How well they'll perform under these circumstances is anybody's guess. Half-century old artillery needs to be maintained. Maintenance is not NorK strong suit. Ammunition needs to be replaced before it becomes unstable. That's one reason the NorKs have all those impressive artillery shoots. They have to shoot them off before they don't work at all. And of course, it serves to scare the South Koreans.

VDH: Remembering the Battle of the Bulge. [townhall.com]
timon_phocas comments on Jan 13, 2020:
I think the Battle of the Bulge showed a singular kind of American courage. It was not universal, but it extended through the Army from the generals all the way down to the privates. It was a sense of initiative from the soldiers A German column would assault through a roadblock. They would report it as cleared and higher headquarters assumed it would stay that way. But the Americans didn't think that way. They regrouped, refortified and set up the roadblock again and again. Isolated engineers blew up supply deports, slipped away and blew bridges. All these isloated, uncoordinated action slowed the Germans until reserves could be found and the front stabilized. This didn't happen when Germans attacked France in 1940. It didn't happen when the Germans attacked Russia in 1942. It happened when Germans attacked Americans in Belgium in Christmas of 1944.

timon_phocas comments on Jan 11, 2020:
I read this too late last night for a more comprehensive answer. So here goes... As a revealed religion, we need to search the Scriptures to establish what the Biblical status actually is. We can always just project our culture's vision, but then it becomes our vision, not Scripture's. The Book of Proverbs is the Bible's guide to wisdom, or skill in the art of living. There are 31 chapters, designed to be read one chapter for each day of the month. There are many warnings against adultery, the sixth chapter in particular has a long passage about the folly and danger of adultery. It is also a condemnation of adulterous women. Balancing this, is an even longer passage in chapter 31 in praise of the virtuous wife. She is no housebound shrinking violet. She travels afar to purchase food (vs 14). She is industrious (vs 15). She buys real estate, plants vinyards (vs 16). She sells merchandise for a profit (vs 17). She spins thread, weaves cloth, makes clothing and sells to merchants (vs 24). She is generous to charities (vs 20). She has a citywide reputation (vs 23 & 30). Lastly, the passage (the last verses in Proverbs) praises this strong, assertive, woman for her wisdom, industry and faith. I would submit this is a more accurate, more Biblical, version of women's status in Christianity.

If the Senate aquits, then Trump has a retort to the impeachment accusations. They want to be able to say Trump was impeached in the next election cycle without his being able to say he was aquited. .
It might come as no surprise that I am no “fan” of the Obamas .

Barrak O is absolutely dependent on whatever script is in front of him. Remember that gaffe where he referred to the Navy "corpseman?"
I’ve been asking one question for years and have NEVER heard an answer.

Howdy @David42, Actually, Rudi Giuliani did it in New York City. He had police stopping people for small, quality of life criminal offenses. They confiscated a lot of guns that way. Then the criminals stopped carrying guns and the murder rate plummeted. That success convinces me that Chicago and other cities with endemic violence suffer them because of political, not economic, issues.
Have you ever come across this expression?

"Democracy is the tyranny of the uninformed" I am reminded of a quote from Neville Chamberlain about a "faraway country, ... of which we know nothing..." He was not some anonymous workman. He had been in Parliament and government for decades. He was part of Britain's elite and yet he was admitting he was uninformed. A couple of other examples come to mind. The Brexit referendum and Donald Trump's election. We were informed by our elites that neither had a chance to succeed. It would seem these elites, degreed and credentialled, were uninformed. I think it's not so much a matter of being uninformed as what you choose to be informed by. In the Civil War, our greatest crisis, we were led by Abraham Lincoln. He was almost universally derided as a backwoods country lawyer; an uninformed hick. He brought new ways of thinking to previously insuperable problems and we won because of him Likewise with Winston Churchill. We think of him today as a demigod of history. He was not thought so in the 1930s. He was a has-been, a Victorian anachronism, erratic and quirky. Like Lincoln, he brought new ways of working through problems and we won because of him. Democracies can produce terrible leaders like Alcibiades or Lyndon Johnson. But when greatness is called for, they tend to deliver up leaders like Lincoln and Churchill. If I were up in some Mount Olympus placing bets, I think I'd put my money on democracy to win.

The Jewish system of 613 commandments covers every aspect of life. But it is leavened by the prophetic voice of God urging mercy. He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God Micah 6:8 Every system of orthoprax doctrine without the leavening of God's mercy devolves into accusation for the sake of power. Think of communism and it's purges. Think of Hitler's purge of the SA. Think of progressives and their nonstop internecine condemnations. Think of Islamist mullahs and their fatwahs against each other. In all these, there is no voice of God's mercy. It's all about power.

It was possible to both own slaves and hate slavery. Slaves were capital assets, often the majority of assets on the books of a plantation. Manumitting slaves would bankrupt plantations which were heavily financed. That was the financial trap Jefferson found himself in. We think of slave ownership as absolute power, but there were thickets of laws around their ownership and employment. If you inherited slaves, many came with entailments forbidding manumission. If families married, slaves from the wife's family came with similar entailments or would revert to the wife's family upon her death. It was not a simple thing to free a slave. That did not make slavery less evil, but it made it a more complex problem.
Perhaps the New York Times is butt hurt since they don't control the agenda anymore.

This is hilarious. Obama surveiled, arrested and prosecuted journalists. He rewarded sycophants by giving them juicy "inside" stories, making them propaganda outlets. He used and abused them like $20 ho's and they loved him for it.
so i was encouraging my dad to audit some college classes since he is retired and has a little free ...

I audited a US history course (Post Civil War to WWII) in September of 2008 at the University of Northern Colorado In one lecture the professor spent the entire period excoriating George W. Bush as the worst war criminal in the history of mankind. Finally, a student asked him about the day's reading assignments. He replied that he didn't care. This lecture was not unique, just a bit more vehement. UNC supposedly has a respected history department. I was dismayed.
