I read this too late last night for a more comprehensive answer. So here goes... As a revealed religion, we need to search the Scriptures to establish what the Biblical status actually is. We can always just project our culture's vision, but then it becomes our vision, not Scripture's. The Book of Proverbs is the Bible's guide to wisdom, or skill in the art of living. There are 31 chapters, designed to be read one chapter for each day of the month. There are many warnings against adultery, the sixth chapter in particular has a long passage about the folly and danger of adultery. It is also a condemnation of adulterous women. Balancing this, is an even longer passage in chapter 31 in praise of the virtuous wife. She is no housebound shrinking violet. She travels afar to purchase food (vs 14). She is industrious (vs 15). She buys real estate, plants vinyards (vs 16). She sells merchandise for a profit (vs 17). She spins thread, weaves cloth, makes clothing and sells to merchants (vs 24). She is generous to charities (vs 20). She has a citywide reputation (vs 23 & 30). Lastly, the passage (the last verses in Proverbs) praises this strong, assertive, woman for her wisdom, industry and faith. I would submit this is a more accurate, more Biblical, version of women's status in Christianity.

Howdy @David42, Actually, Rudi Giuliani did it in New York City. He had police stopping people for small, quality of life criminal offenses. They confiscated a lot of guns that way. Then the criminals stopped carrying guns and the murder rate plummeted. That success convinces me that Chicago and other cities with endemic violence suffer them because of political, not economic, issues.

"Democracy is the tyranny of the uninformed" I am reminded of a quote from Neville Chamberlain about a "faraway country, ... of which we know nothing..." He was not some anonymous workman. He had been in Parliament and government for decades. He was part of Britain's elite and yet he was admitting he was uninformed. A couple of other examples come to mind. The Brexit referendum and Donald Trump's election. We were informed by our elites that neither had a chance to succeed. It would seem these elites, degreed and credentialled, were uninformed. I think it's not so much a matter of being uninformed as what you choose to be informed by. In the Civil War, our greatest crisis, we were led by Abraham Lincoln. He was almost universally derided as a backwoods country lawyer; an uninformed hick. He brought new ways of thinking to previously insuperable problems and we won because of him Likewise with Winston Churchill. We think of him today as a demigod of history. He was not thought so in the 1930s. He was a has-been, a Victorian anachronism, erratic and quirky. Like Lincoln, he brought new ways of working through problems and we won because of him. Democracies can produce terrible leaders like Alcibiades or Lyndon Johnson. But when greatness is called for, they tend to deliver up leaders like Lincoln and Churchill. If I were up in some Mount Olympus placing bets, I think I'd put my money on democracy to win.

It was possible to both own slaves and hate slavery. Slaves were capital assets, often the majority of assets on the books of a plantation. Manumitting slaves would bankrupt plantations which were heavily financed. That was the financial trap Jefferson found himself in. We think of slave ownership as absolute power, but there were thickets of laws around their ownership and employment. If you inherited slaves, many came with entailments forbidding manumission. If families married, slaves from the wife's family came with similar entailments or would revert to the wife's family upon her death. It was not a simple thing to free a slave. That did not make slavery less evil, but it made it a more complex problem.

Perhaps the New York Times is butt hurt since they don't control the agenda anymore.

I audited a US history course (Post Civil War to WWII) in September of 2008 at the University of Northern Colorado In one lecture the professor spent the entire period excoriating George W. Bush as the worst war criminal in the history of mankind. Finally, a student asked him about the day's reading assignments. He replied that he didn't care. This lecture was not unique, just a bit more vehement. UNC supposedly has a respected history department. I was dismayed.
