I don’t celebrate Columbus Day Because I found out he was a slave trader : HOWEVER I DON’T GO AROUND TEARING DOWN STATUES OF HIM AND I DON’T BUG PEOPLE FOR CELEBRATING . I Also Don’t Go Around Tearing Down Photos Of Hateful Leaders of the Past LIKE HITLER Etc... BECAUSE I WANT MY KIDS TO KNOW THE TRUTH ABOUT THE EVIL THEY DID SO MY KIDS KNOW HOW TO STOP IT TO BEGIN WITH.

Did you know there are no statues of Hitler in Germany, and Nazi symbolism is illegal? Yet everyone in Germany is aware of WWII and the Holocaust - no statues needed.

You also have to understand that a majority of Confederate statues weren't built after the Civil War, but during the Jim Crow era, with a large amount erected between 1900 and 1920. Some were even put up as recently as the 60's, and one was even put up in 2007. These aren't statues honoring brave soldiers - they are monuments towards racism, idolizing traitors and losers.

Let me ask you, what are your thoughts on other countries, like perhaps Iraq. In 2003, when Saddam Hussein was removed from power, the people toppled one of his statues. Did you have the same feeling, that they should have kept his statue up?

I never quite understood Columbus Day anyway. He didn't really "discover America" first, and we didn't even name America after him - that was Amerigo Vespucci. Why not have a Vespucci day instead?

What Columbus did was one of the most important events in human history, opening a permanent connection between the old world and new. Columbus Day marks that. Columbus did more for globalization than any other person in history. He was NOT a slave trader. He may have not ever realized he ran into a new continent and thought he was in somewhere near India. An Italian, Amerigo Vespucci, wrote a book about Columbus, there was no name for North or South America yet, it was called the unknown lands. As most people who found out about this did so via Amerigo's book, they started referring to it as America.

There is a concerted effort by the left to rewrite history and paint the most meritorious individuals as bad and explain all history in a victim oppressor frame. You can watch this process in real time by noticing how left media treats Elon Musk going forward. You can see this contrast with Obama who got a Nobel Peace prize only weeks into his presidency, Obama had no time to have done anything yet.

Leaders face constraints and imperatives and somehow you must reconcile the two and make optimal choices. Using the victim oppressor fame is not optima to say the least.

Learning actual history is extremely helpful.

I don't know why we want to insist on judging people from yesteryear through the lens of todays society. You are on the money about history and historical figures, they were not perfect people but there are many lessons to be learned from them. They are how we got to where we are today. Cancel them all as many people want to do and those lessons are forgotten. Tragic.
