Has anyone in Ontario been involved in a motor vehicle collision and had the OPP seize their cell phone? I am trying to determine how prevalent this illegal practice has gotten. If you reside in another province has this happened to you or someone you know? I currently have a complaint filed with the OPP Commissioner and this information would be useful in this process.

Not sure if it's of any interest but this is standard procedure in UK and a good way of ensuring none of those involved were distracted by using their mobile phone or sending texts etc whilst driving (both unlawful) which may have contributed to the collision taking place. It's a good way of protecting those who were not distracted by their phones and identifying those who may have been. It's appropriate to seek and seize evidence in relation to potential offences and there is nothing to fear although could be inconvenient. Seizure to examine should be for a minimum period to limit inconvenience.

So no reasonable grounds required before seizing personal property? If that sort of dictatorial and unconstitutional is of no concern to you then you and I are on the opposite ends of the political spectrum.

@jakuboj possibly, but probably not, Iā€™d suggest anyone who had suffered injury or costly damage as a result of another driver not paying attention would be pleased all evidence would be reviewed?

@Jasper Very slippery slope. I suggest you think bigger picture.
