So I'm interested in the term Nationalism, or Nationalist, and how this term is being described as a dog whistle for the white nationalist of neo nazi groups. I have my own take on this, but would love to hear this idea defended.

I hate that the word nationalism has taken on a negative connotation. It is logical that I prefer the interests of my own country over that of another. I'm very specifically referring to Americans of any race or creed. For some reason it only seems to be bad when we, in Western countries, apply it. Nationalist. Patriot. Constitutionalist. Nothing wrong with those words.

It really bothers me that nationalism is synonymous with racism. I live in Scotland and I support Scottish independence. I vote SNP (Scottish National Party) and by all accounts could probably be called a nationalist. The issue is that our nationalist movement is incredibly socially inclusive and welcoming of other cultures and nationalities. Our government’s white paper on independence actually argued that immigrants are net contributors to our economy and we’d need an increase in migrant workers over the next 25 years, to deal with our ageing population. Ask anyone who’s spent any time in Scotland, we really do welcome everyone with open arms, but “nationalist” is used as a pejorative by those who oppose our politics.

That's really interesting that Scottland would get a negative label for that terminology. I might have expected that you guys wouldn't have the most diverse group of folks just based on the convenience of access such as having diverse borders. You would almost have to fly there to get discriminated against! lol... I am Sottish by lineage and very much look forward to taking part in the hospitality you're describing!

"Nationalism" has been taught as a taboo concept, because history academics identify it as the primary trend leading up to two world wars. The word that should be used to replace Nationalism, in the context of state induced aggressive behavior, is Jingoism. Interestingly, Nationalism appears as a bad word now days, when used in connection with American exceptionalism, particularly when constitutional conservatives are the target of Globalist ire. Nationalism seems okay though when used in context other than American nationalism. Just watch what happens when another nations team wins the World Cup. Nobody has trouble when used in the context of healthcare either. Interesting.

I think we live in the greatest country, and most likely the greatest society in the world. I am not ashamed of the word nationalist. I believe it's meaning has been intentionally highjacked to spin votes...but I am a bit of a cynic.

One of the best essays I've read on Nationalism is by George Orwell in an essay called Nationalism vs Patriotism.

Nationalism to me can be a problem in that it is a collective term but it is a big problem when a qualifier is attached such as "socialism".

Patriotism is an individual's expression of a love of country, it is mostly passive and not activist, whereas nationalism is a collective expression of faithfulness to a national identity and requires an expressed agreement to forward and support it.

White supremacists, neo nazis are forms of nationalism that have the element of racism attached to it. some racist activism can and should be expected of them. However, racism in America today has no systemic support. Unfortunately, there is an exception in "good-intentioned" legislation such as Affirmative Action. As good-intentioned as it is, since it was conceived as corrective measure and a leveling of the playing field, it only continues to create racial dissent by ignoring merit.

I think we'll be ok if we remain willing to call out the intentional weaponization of such benign terms. I think the racist intentions of other societies borrowed otherwise harmless vernacular to disguise bad intentions.

@Davisz1 Yep. I would call it the politicization of terms.

Antisemitism was quite prevalent in Europe after WWI. Hitler thought communism was a Jewish conspiracy, after all Marx and Engels were Jewish and many Jews were involved in the Russian revolution and in the Communist parties that were expanding in Europe. Today socialism, of which Communism, fascism, Nazism, Maoism are all socialist ideologies, is thought of as simply free stuff paid for by the government. No thought of or connection to loss of life on a mass scale.

What about Swedish socialism? Make no mistake, the end goal of all forms of socialism is the total state. Swedish socialism is not any different. It's democratic socialism which is a process. It starts by taking over the control of the money supply, moves to education and healthcare. Then the family. Soon, no matter the public opinion, government becomes big enough to make its policies and programs mandatory at which point a totalitarian regime is installed and a constitution becomes irrelevant, replaced with a manifesto.

@FrankZeleniuk According to the Laffer curve developed at Berkley by a husband-wife team, the point at which tax revenue starts to decline as the rate inclines, is about 33%. This would indicate that eventually, as people begin to resist paying higher and higher taxes near 60%, force becomes the only recourse. Disarmament would be required to shore up socialism, becoming communism, and fascism is the only good cure for dissent, and there we have it. A totalitarian regime is born...

What!?!
You haven’t noticed that the Left, Left Liberal, Democrat, RINOs, DINOs, Establishment Pukes take ANY Word they want and turn it upside down, inside out?
A couple examples; Liberalism, Progressive, Democracy and ... my favorite ... Gay.
All perfectly good words, most being used to denote the Exact Opposite of their actual meaning.
I bet you can come up with a few ...

So ... “Nationalism”/“Nationalist” ... well, gee ... the only really Famous Use was in reference to “National Democratic ...” (aka. “NAZI) ... therefore, “National...” MUST BE Bad ...

National = NAZI = Skinheads who are Obviously Racist ... because the NAZIs were ... even as they try to DENY the Death Camps because ... ummm the Jews = RIGHT FACISTS (although Facism is actually completely Leftist ideology) = Wellll they MUST BE NAZIs because Who Else could Possibly be a “NATIONALIST”?

Perfect. Circular. “Logic”.

But forcing people to buy products they don't need, disarming the citizenry, and labeling all opposition as hate speech is Democratic and forward thinking. The term liberal was highjacked from a Nobel movement to hide the intentions of those aimed at culling liberty. Imagine that...
