It seems crazy to me that Milton Friedman is remembered as a conservative. He was a classical liberal. Economic freedom seems like a conservative idea because there will be losers. But that's life. He was also a proponent of Universal Basic income or "negative income tax" as he called it, because he knew that the preservation of western society is the ONLY thing more important than a free economy. Your thoughts?

I wasn't aware that he backed a universal basic income...

He called it "negative income tax" google it. Friedman was a genius

@LastLiberal Friedman was also in favour of flat income tax.
For decades I have been in favour of using a system which includes both Universal Basic Income and Universal Flat Income Tax.

@pbuck0145 a flat tax would exacerbate income inequality though. A flat tax is fair but it fails to account for human nature. It is ideas ideas like the flat tax that caused people to misidentify friedman as a conservative

@LastLiberal A system consisting of a flat tax together with a UBI can be as "progressive" as required simply by setting the appropriate flat tax rate and UBI amount.

@pbuck0145 A flat tax is fair on paper but in practice it is anything but. For example, lets say you are offering a product or that is in high demand. The majority will for said product or , but you will only remain profitable so long as the public infrastructure required for you provide said good or remains functional. So for every dollar that you make that requires public support, you should be taxed proportionately. If not, the infrastructure required will inevitably collapse due to the lack dominant players within the market.

@pbuck0145 That's why friedman was a proponent of UBI or the negative income tax. He recognized in order for a free market to remain free one has to encourage and incentivize competition. He also regularly spoke against the collusion between industry and government, because he knew that any industry that can influence government can, through compulsion, eliminate competition. And competition is the backbone of a mutually beneficial free market economy

@LastLiberal Obfuscation is neither a valid nor an effective debate stratagem.

@pbuck0145 hahaha sorry. Just read my comments and there are words missing. I was typing way too fast. It was unintentional obfuscation. My apologies
