If humanity is doomed...it's doomed because people didn't talk to each other enough.

This website gives me a headache sometimes. I see the conspiracy theories flying past constantly. I see the frequent thought processes I see as irrational, but I'm glad there's talking going on here.

No matter how much chaos is wrought through communication now, over time, I suspect that the better ideas will stick, as correct ones tend to do, and the worse ideas will fade away, because that's what talking about issues does.

Talking is a way to spread impulse-driven, armchair reasoning...and that impulse-driven, armchair reasoning can spread far, like any contagious disease.

But over time the body adapts to diseases it survives. It becomes resistant, and diseases tend to only infect the body for a finite amount of time, in most instances.

Well-reasoned facts, though, those stick within the mind permanently.

With that in mind, I am more thankful for nothing more than the existence of discussion forums, right now. I eagerly await the day when their clumsy, disease-ridden, impulse-driven venting outlets have evolved into a mighty force for human growth - into a means to connect minds and souls like the dendrites and axons of a brain cell.

Time is on our species's side. We just have to avoid blowing ourselves up or something for as long as possible.

We will not blow ourselves up, we will continue behaving in such a fear-agressive manner that our next stage, happening right now, will be a rapid mass attrition and a return to small populations of waring groups. Our survival instincts served us successfully as hunter-gatherers but do not serve us in dense populations where many cultures occupying the same spaces are vying for control. Our instincts are unable to evolve rapidly enough to adapt to our living conditions today.

I agree almost completely. "Blowing ourselves up" was just a way of referring to some kind of oncoming disaster.

My hope is that after that happens (although I think there is a chance it won't) after society falls, when civilization emerges again, (or hopefully before it falls) the power of language will be able to alter human nature to a greater degree than it already has...and I definitely think it has. It's just that our instincts are still dragging us down. We've got to alter culture more to account for that...which we've done in the past, in all sorts of ways. It's just a question of whether we can do it again with these particular instincts.
