Our lessons on modern Islamist radicalism have not been well learned. You would think we would have figured it out after the invasion of Afghanistan by Russia (by inadvertently supporting mujahideen) and the subsequent birth of Al Qaeda and the catastrophe of 9/11. We haven’t. “Americans were unknowingly playing the role of Midwife while al Qaeda was in the birth canal”. Taliban is in the birth canal. They are crowning.
