I don't understand how the ancient laws of conquest have become so wishy-washy the last several decades. They took it, it's theirs, and fuck all the whiners. Blood was shed, they paid for it, and bought not only the land, but the safety benefits of the taking.

Because the ancient tradition of "right of sword" was never really established in Europe. The Romans encountered this issue with the Germans, often trying to impose "international" rules and regulations on foreign powers to keep them in check, but ignoring the laws during times of conquest themselves. The truth is that "might is right" has always been a simpler philosophy whereby the victor receives the spoils and all is settled, but there has always been attempts by large empires to impose law and order to the traditions of conquest—and that extends back to at least Persia and the Greeks.

For Israel, controlling the Golan Heights is not a matter of doing what is right by the international community, it is well known that the Golan Heights are used by Syria as a staging area for war. They also use the terrain to shell Israel from higher ground. Israel measures the strategic importance of the Golan Heights in Israeli lives, whereas the international community sees it as a sentimental patch of dirt.

@benicho Not sure if you understood, but the "they" I spoke of was the Israelis. Not sure if your comment was meant as agreement or if you mistook what I was saying.

I'll make time to watch your video in a little while, but I wanted to register my agreement with your statement above, "I think the history of Syria proves Israel should keep the Golan Heights." Absolutely. And not just the history of Syria, but the history of Israel. King David made that Israeli territory, if I'm not mistaken.

Speaking as an American voter, for as many concerns as I had about presidential candidate Donald Trump, this is one of a number of things that have not just pleasantly surprised me but given me great satisfaction. I voted for someone else in 2016, thinking that Trump would abandon his campaign trail rhetoric and become a voice/agent for the progressive Left. Instead, he virtually surrounded himself with conservative advisors and people of quality. Perhaps not all, but many. He was the first (only) president to keep his campaign promise to move the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem; either five or six presidents before him had promised to do this, including Obama, but they "forgot" and didn't carry through. Whatever his other flaws and shortcomings, I am grateful that at least he has proven to be a strong advocate for Israel.

I'm Canadian, and I am pleased with Trump's treatment of Israel as well.
Our Prime Minister has not been good for Israel. Hopefully he gets voted out this October.

A few extra bits of info. Syria controlled the Golan Heights until the very last 2 days of the 1967 war. From 1948 through June of 1967 they would shell the Galilee from the Golan whenever the mood struck them. And they would infiltrate terrorists down the hills under cover of that fire to kill and destroy in the Galilee.

Once, they tried to dam up and divert the headwaters of the Jordan River,. The Jordan flows into Lake Genesseret (Sea of Galilee) which is the central reservoir of the entire Israeli water system. This caused a small but nasty battle. Israel won. Some analysts think this was the real precipitating event for the 1967 war.

In the1973 war, Syrian attacks wore down and broke through Israel's Golan defenses. They were only stopped when their tanks reached the Galilee itself. If the Golan defense zone hadn't been there, Israel would have lost the war.

Hafez al Assad was considered to be an Alawite Muslim. You are very right that he was not considered a Muslim by the Muslim Brotherhood, but rather a member of an apostate sect. Because he was part of a minority OTOH, he treated other minorities gently. They were a counter balance to the Sunni majority. And you are very right again that he was absolutely ruthless towards the Muslim Brotherhood.

So Syrians were very dangerous neighbors when they controlled the Golan. Now that Bashar al Assad is a puppet of the Iranians, the Israelis are even less likely to give up control of the Golan.

The more I learn the harder it is to understand how anyone would expect Israel to hand the land back!

A lot of wars and murdering of innocents. Lots of evil!! Yes, Israel they should keep Golan Heights. Maybe the Syrians should think about cleaning up their country and thank God they have a country instead of spreading their evil to other countries. It has withstood many wars, time to make peace with their own people!
