Stalin deliberately starved Ukraine to eliminate independent farmers in 1932-33. The next Soviet census showed six million fewer Ukrainians. Stalin had the statisticians executed.

Mao deliberately starved all of China in his Great Leap Forward. Millions died, and they've never even been counted. Its ostensible goals were to raise China's agriculture and steel output. Its real goal was to cement Mao as the god-like absolute ruler.

In the 1980s Nicolae Ceaucescu reduced Romania to a starvation diet and used its agricultural output to pay off foreign debt. Marines in the embassy said they had to step around bodies on the street every morning on their way to work.

Mengistu became ruler of Ethiopia in a series of coups and decided Communism was its way forward. He began collectivising farming and transferring ethnic groups for security purposes. Severe famine began, they blamed it on drought. Millions died of starvation, famine, purges and civil wars. In the West, we just remember Live Aid concerts.

Robert Mugabe took over Rhodesia, renamed it Zimbabwe, and looted it into poverty. The country once called the Breadbasket of Africa was reduced to starvation. Fifty percent of its population suffering from malnutrition.

Kim il Sung reduced North Korea to starvation after the Soviet Union stopped sending subsidies. Five to ten percent of the people died in the resulting famine. It hasn't gotten much better. North Korean soldiers stationed at Panmunjon are, on average, three inches shorter than their South Korean counterparts.

Venezuela, once the richest country in Latin America, is now in the middle of a famine. Maduro had to make it a prison offense to list starvation as cause of death.

This list is incomplete, just what I remember off the top of my head.

Famine is not an effect of socialism. It is a deliberate feature.

And they all patterned their policies after the Union treatment of the former Confederate states following the Second American Revolution. So don't be smug.

@Segovia

or rather, Sherman's path through Georgia and the Carolinas.

Every point here is valid and true and some a little understated! But I'm afraid it falls on millions of deaf ears! Especially in the educational system of this country at every level!

Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge from 63 to 97. Cambodia was renamed Democratic Kampuchea. Pol Pot's socialist vision was an agrarian society. The wealthy and the intellectuals and professionals were killed. The cambodian genocide, combined with disease and starvation killed between 1.5 and 3 million of Cambodia's own people.
