In all honesty, although Putin is deadly, I have never thought he was the sort to go off half-cocked. This video to me makes absolute sense. Personally I'm really tired of Putin and Russia being the "bogey man" Western governments frighten their people with. The West just doesn't want their citizens to know he has good reason to be attacking. Remember the Cuban Missile Crisis? I sure do.

They may well be on the same page, however in recent years solidarity has not always been followed up by expected action. Further, their solidarity doesn't mean they are right, they could just be in cahoots.
@toronto_Georgia in reflection, it reminded me of when Soviet Union broke up and Russia went into Georgia to the stop civil war there I thought. The US couldn't do much about it because 'Read My Lips No New Taxes' Bush was too busy taking out the 4th most powerful military combat hardened nation in the world at that time, that was built up by the West to be a thorn in Iran's side, after Iran was built up to be a threat to the underbelly of the USSR 
I don't think right and/or wrong is in the equation. More like the lesser of 2 evils and it is just plain evil.
