I shared these thoughts with a few friends a couple days ago. Seeing nothing in the news, in alternative media, or on social media other than a collective lurch toward a single bandwagon, "Ukraine good, Russia bad," I haven't found anything to alleviate my growing conviction that we are being severely gaslighted by power-hungry politicians and a complicit, narrative-driven media conglomerate. "Never let a good crisis go to waste," as Rahm Emanuel and others have said. And, since watching Oliver Stone's 2016 documentary, "Ukraine on Fire," I'm even more concerned that, not only did Western governments & politicians fail to quell the flames of violence in Ukraine, they fanned them—purportedly representing me, with my tax dollars. I would be glad to see evidence to the contrary, but I don't believe it exists. As you contemplate what I wrote below, perhaps inject this as a lens through which to view the conflict: How would the people of Québec react if Canada were to outlaw French? And, do we value self-determination (Liberty) as much as our forefathers did? As much as the people of the Donbas region do? Here are the thoughts that have been nagging at me, almost since Day One:

One thing that keeps niggling at the back of my mind is that almost ten years ago Russian-speaking ethnic Russians living on historically-Russian land decided to declare independence from ethnic Ukrainians who speak Ukrainian. Rather than recognizing the newly formed Donetsk People's Republic and Luhansk People's Republic, the Ukrainian government responded to them with oppression & artillery shells. Given that the United States was created by people who similarly broke away from a government that they felt wasn't treating them fairly, and that we are supposedly "champions of liberty" supporting freedom fighters everywhere, how is it that we have yet to recognize either of these republics—but Russia did? Everybody is up in arms over the Russian invasion of Ukraine, but nobody cared at all about the people of the Donbas region and the new republics they formed in 2014 until the Russians came to their aid. People claim to be upset about Putin's shelling/bombing civilians, but not one of them blinked for the last ~8 years while the Ukrainian Army blasted people who wanted to choose autonomy over subjugation. Why is that? Can anyone answer me? Who can justify the Ukrainians' shelling of Donetsk and Luhansk? And who can justify the fact that the Western world practically ignored it for alarmingly close to a decade? But—Russia invading Ukraine? gasp —we have to all clutch our pearls now. What about the people who wanted Liberty who are caught in the middle?

Very good and legitimate points! I'm not buying the propaganda either. Thank you
