My only question, Why does it not switch to star-link when out of normal service, rather than all the time ... Future Software upgrade? Maybe his own service provider company comes hot on the heels of this, and I don't mean Star-Link, But 5G and Star-link makes a strange combo, and I'm worried about the actual specs. I'l wait and see. Nice idea, but I suspect reality might be a bit less than the vision

Although I like the political leaning of this guy, the fact that his electric car only averages something under 40 mpg when you consider power station fuel usage and electric transmission inefficiencies, as well as a host of other factors, and that just like Germany, the artificial financial support of electric rates intended to stimulate development of electric cars will soon vanish, making power far more expensive for all of us, just so it is temporarily a better deal for electric car owners.

Then there is the fact that lead acid batteries are already 70% efficient, meaning physics will prevent even a 20% increase in charge density in ANY KIND OF BATTERY - if there is even such a discovery. There hasn’t been in 50 years, making investments in battery technology the second worst investment in history (after photovoltaic panel development). For electric cars to be competitive with fossil engines - which they will have to be for another century, the charge density would have to nearly double. Never going to happen, and this guy seems clueless.

As an engineer myself, I am not impressed by some of his space designs, and wonder how he managed to succeed so well with Starlink. I suspect he may be like Gates, who managed to buy technology or hire technicians to accomplish things beyond his own understanding.

That also probably means his β€œvision” of a Mars colony is economically unrealistic, and the attempts will probably involve loss of life.

I think Elon is the "dreamer of bold new frontiers" and his wealth permits him to hire the best minds in each field giving expression to their talent. Musk comes from an extremely wealthy family to begin with which sure helped his start. His visionary mind and marketing sense is what banks and governments are very willing to invest in. He may not have perfection but makes one hell of a platform from which future brains and dreamers can launch.

@toronto_Georgia IMO Gates is responsible for setting computer technology back 30 years, by promoting inferior technologies, and killing off better technologies. That's the problem with "visionaries" without the grounding in the nuts and bolts. I have been called a visionary, but I also know the limitations of physics.

@TimTuolomne I suspect Mr. Gates had ulterior and somewhat nefarious motives. As to Musk, I really do believe he is altruistic, not perfect, but well intentioned.

@toronto_Georgia I hope you are right. Like Gates, he is not going away.

so - is there any proven data on the hazards of 5g hand held devices or is that just a bunch of haters making a lot of noise about nothing

No data. Only models, assumptions and the desire to scare everyone.

Personally I haven't looked for any however there is a lot of coverage about dead birds and vegetation around the towers. As far as bodily harm from the hand helds themselves, may be too early to have a substantial body of material to study. Cell phone use itself has lots of data on brain tumors and breast tumors. As with anything best practices rule.

@TimTuolomne Damn Luddites LOL. Tim, I'm not laughing at you. I suspect it is just too early for any real data to be available. I am always open to all the possibilities both good and bad. Cave days don't really appeal to me.

@toronto_georgia @timtuolomne

hmmm...

@toronto_Georgia I appreciate your sense of humor. As an engineer, capable of analyzing data and studies statistically, and determining what they mean and don’t mean, I am confident using cell phones, and more comfortable with 5G than previous modes, because of the lower energies they use - something the scare-mongers seem to have neglected to admit.

@TimTuolomne I wasn't aware that you were/are an engineer. My respect. Scare-mongers are currently ruling the information cycles much to all our loss. I naturally lean to the humanities. A common sense world needs both to thrive. Glad you saw it was said in humor.
