An absolute respect for the Sovereignty of the Individual is an extreme position; extremely American.
What they refuse to admit, is that an absolute disregard for that same sovereignty is just as extreme, and it is un-American.
I would say that it's also un-British, and even "un-Western"... but that's for other people to decide.

America, as an ideal, is still just as promising and as just as it ever was.
America, as a place, is indeed "really messed up right now"; to the extent that we have people pulling levers of "authority" and illegitimate power who simply don't understand or respect that ideal.
And, don't look now... but I believe it's the same recurrent scourge that is spreading once again throughout the West.

24. Infiltrate the churches and replace revealed religion with “social” religion. Discredit the Bible and emphasize the need for intellectual maturity, which does not need a “religious crutch.”

25. Eliminate prayer or any phase of religious expression in the schools on the ground that it violates the principle of “separation of church and state.”

26. Discredit the American Constitution by calling it inadequate, old-fashioned, out of step with modern needs, a hindrance to cooperation between nations on a worldwide basis.

27. Discredit the American Founding Fathers. Present them as selfish aristocrats who had no concern for the “common man.”

28. Belittle all forms of American culture and discourage the teaching of American history.

29. Discredit and eventually dismantle the FBI.

30. Infiltrate and gain control of more unions.

32. Discredit the family as an institution. Encourage promiscuity and easy divorce.

33. Emphasize the need to raise children away from the negative influence of parents. Attribute prejudices, mental blocks and retarding of children to suppressive influence of parents.

As an outsider, I can't really see what is going on in the US, but considering the fact that more than 70 million people voted for Trump, which amounts to 47.2 percent of the total votes counted (as of 2020), anyone, let alone President, labeling their own people - millions of them - as extremists sounds bizarre.

Academia, most old line news outlets, the entertainment industry, and Democrats are decidedly progressive. They control most urban areas. They feel American society is intrinsically unjust. They have encouraged riots and looting. Crime has skyrocketed since it's not been punished. Punishment is condemned as unjust.

But America is not entirely urban and progressive. There is widespread dissent with progressive policies. Progressives respond like the president did, accusing his opponents of violence and sedition. The odd thing is his opponents are among the most law-abiding parts of society. We find it puzzling at best, and outrage provoking.

Catastrophic foreign defeats, uncontrolled immigration, a hundred-thousand opioid deaths a year, rampant crime, spiralling energy prices, and the worst inflation in forty years. All this happening and the president says the worst danger the country faces is that those who disagree with him are extremists. So yes, we are angry.

Apparently I’m not an extremist, because I like ~63% of Americans think Joe has done a horrible job.

A bell curve would put extremists outside the norm and thus uncommon. Calling half the population extremist is a bit of a stretch. There are some extremists in most societies. Right now there are some extremists in control of the government who are dividing the nation politically and socially.

I call them extremists because they are socialists and America is not socialist. They are extremists because they are destructive to the extant social norms of western society.

US, Inc. is pretty messed up, but America is doing pretty well across the vast majority of her.

It appears to me that the conservatives have not yet been able to organize to fight back any and all extremists, left or right. Not unexpected because conservatives are like a heard of cats, impossible to control anyone who wants to be left alone and wants to leave others the same way, in a country where a minority includes the media, wants to control everyone else by creating emergencies.

Well, to an intensely religious man, an agnostic is a heretic. So, the difference between the parties has to count.
