The Arizona senator won't say whether she's running for reelection but said in an interview she doesn't expect a change in how the Senate operates.
… Sinema asserted she has a different goal in mind: fully separating herself from a party that’s never really been a fit, despite the Democratic Party’s support in her hard-fought 2018 race. That year she became the first Democrat in three decades to win a Senate race in Arizona, defeating former Sen. Martha McSally (R-Ariz.).…
She insisted that she won’t deviate from her past approach to confirming Democratic presidential appointees, whom she scrutinizes but generally supports, and said she expects to keep her committee assignments through the Democrats (she currently holds two subcommittee chairmanships). Nor, she said, will anything change about her ideology, which is more socially liberal than most Republicans on matters like abortion and more fiscally conservative than most Democrats.…
While I hold no love for her as one of my senator's, she has at times voted for us in Arizona rather than the democrat party. But she is no republican - views on abortion & gun rights would have to flip 180 deg. Just gave to wonder what her motivation is, how it will help or hurt each established parties. Is she electable as an independent, will she draw from both parts or just one? Wild card that's for sure - would never get my vote, doubt if she could carry my county... but she just might carry the new independent state of Maricopa
Sinema knows the DNC plans to primary her in her next election. She's just keeping her seat.
Good for her.
A well played move as well.
It screws up … a little … the Democrats’ “Lock” on the “Majority” Status and makes Manchin relevant again.
I wonder if this helps?
I wonder if Manchin has “Learned” anything from getting screwed over by his “colleagues”?
@Garsco
Yes, I don’t think it changes the Dem Lock on “Procedures” very much … if at all.
What I see it changing is the “We are the MAJORITY” mindset where they are going to have to be more cautious about expectations of “Winning” the vote based on Uncompromising ‘Pie In The Sky’ Ideals.
While the Democrats can often count on gaining a few Ass Kissing “Republican” votes, they’re becoming somewhat shakier in their own Party.
Sinema has put herself beyond their overt pressure tactics …
How well that works remains to be seen.
