For cold weather operation, only buy "All weather tires" with the mountain symbol and the snowflakes inside.

Those are the only rubber tire compounds that won't harden as slippery as ice below 40F. I made that mistake in college when I owned a 65 Olds with bald tires. I bought one pair of All Season tires, put them on the back and promptly skidded straight through a roundabout in Syracuse NY when it was about 35F.
