As Trump kicks off his 2020 campaign, he will need to respond to criticism of unfulfilled promises and define a vision to re-energize his base. What do you see as his strengths and weaknesses going forward? Is it enough to blame the Democrats and fake news? Can he "Make America Great Again"? Related: can "Build the wall and make Mexico pay for it" be fulfilled by "Have Mexico pay to keep immigrants waiting in Mexico and start sending illegal immigrants back"? [twitter.com]

Geez, I think nearly all of the voters who voted for Trump see that he's done an extraordinary job in the face of the most comprehensive resistance campaign ever devised. Unfulfilled promises? People on this side aren't stupid. They see what's going on and who's to blame for it. I also think he's garnered new voters that have seen an outsider get into the presidency and actually try to lead. Just like in 2016, there aren't many people willing to go on record. The left threatens voters with all sorts of negative consequences. It makes sense people wouldn't want to divulge their support for Trump. The polls were junk then, the polls are junk now.

Were I Trump, I'd come with what he's tried to do and how it was obstructed, and I'd ask the American people to stand with him against the obstructionists. The people really are the power beind the office. I'm hoping to see a popular vote win/electoral trouncing. But, I don't think we'll know until election night.

Also, can the Democrats find a way to cheat significantly enough to win an election they don't win? They've done just that in California, so can they translate their cheats onto the national stage without being caught? This is humanity at its absolute worst.

>> Were I Trump, I'd come with what he's tried to do and how it was obstructed, and I'd ask the American people to stand with him against the obstructionists.

You mean, form a WALL or a FENCE or a BARRIER OF SOME KIND, possibly made of skin or bone or Common Sense...

@jwhitten, haha, no. More about connecting to the people in a sincere way and setting that relationship as primary while exposing the left's agenda of deception and obstruction.

@chuckpo Exposing it whom exactly? Everybody on the right already knows and the folks on the left are the ones doing it.

@jwhitten, baaaaa'aaaaaaaa

We need to help by getting rid of the Democrats in congress rocking the boat. Build the wall, deport illegals, restore and strengthen gun rights.

>> We need to help by getting rid of the Democrats in congress rocking the boat. Build the wall, deport illegals, restore and strengthen gun rights.

Just build the wall around Hollywood and you'll take care of the whole list.

Trump can easily point to several victories not all being economic. He said he would move the US embassy in Israel to Jerusalem. He did. He promised to eliminate regulations harming, farmers, steel producers, miners, energy producers, small businesses, manufactures, small local banks and in turn all those employed in these industries. He did. Trump Promised to end the China Centric Asian TPP trade agreement. He did. Trump promised to end and replace NAFTA. He did. He promised to end the inane Iranian Nuclear Accords. He did. He promised to withdraw from the Paris Climate Accords. He did. He attempted to end Obamacare....John McCain with cancer clouding his brain stopped him.

Trumps has accomplished or attempted to accomplish more campaign promises than any President in my lifetime. That goes back to Eisenhower. His current effort to round up the illegal alien democrat voting base is genius. He has been under constant attack by corrupt democrats and resisted and abandoned at key junctures by establishment republicans all while battling the entrenched career deep state and still has accomplished an amazing amount. He will beat them all in the end because he is just starting to go on offense. Wait and see how many indictments, confessions, and flips shake loose in the coming year. All as illegals dry up and wallets fatten.

The “China centric TPP”??

The TPP was the last thing China wanted the US to do.

any criticisms of Trumps "unfulfilled promises" should be placed squarely on the doorstep of the Legislative and Judiciary branches of Gov't.

6

His number one accomplishment, and the one I think that benefitted the American people the most, was keeping HILLARY CLINTON from getting elected. And not only that, focused the spotlight on her wretched self as she went cry-bullying her way around the world WAAAAH WAAAAAH WAAAAAH "I was ROBBED, I didn't win the election I BOUGHT AND PAID FOR" WAAAAH WAAAAH WAAAAAH, "Oh the MISOGYNY"....

Thank you Donald Trump, from the bottom of my heart, for taking that one action which indisputably made America GREATER THAN GREAT, again.

I can't wait to vote for you again in 2020 (and 2024... 😉 )

MAGA / KAG

@CanuckAmok @CanuckAmok Trumps OURS, Dude. We saw him first. Get your OWN Trump. Better yet, DUMP your OWN Trudeau and it will work out about the same!! 🙂

@CanuckAmok I'm sure Doug Ford will be Prime Minister soon enough.

What do you see as his strengths and weaknesses going forward?

My 2 cents: Weakness - Not politically correct. Strengths: Not politically correct.
In the land of the habitually offended Trump certainly keeps the snowflakes on their toes. However, many see it as a breath of fresh air. No doubt he could tone down the rhetoric, but I am not sure this would be a great move at this point. It's as if he knows that when he rubs the cat the wrong way he will be noticed.

I think there is something to be said for his in your face strategies when it comes to negotiating. He seems to want his opposition to make emotional decisions. Like a bad car salesmen, "you're payments will be $1200 a month! Nah just kidding, there only $600! Wow that's much better. The media is a sucker for this move. Say the worst possible thing and then slip in what you can live with.

Is it enough to blame the Democrats and fake news?

My 2 cents: Absolutely not. He has a job to do. He made promises and should work to make them happen. This is how our government works. This is what protects us from tyranny. Trump will not be the one great hero of our democratic republic. I do believe he is the hammer to tone down some of the far left madness and push for socialism. We need to do a better job of reminding our young people of their history so they are not doomed to repeat the 20th century.

In a nutshell, don't blame others. Do the job.

Can he "Make America Great Again"?

If greatness is a return to the spirit of the democratic republic foundation of our country I think he is making headway. Again, for now he is a big hammer and that's what we need for the moment. at some point we have to narrow the poles and get closer together. I am not very optimistic on this front. ~sigh~

"Build the wall and make Mexico pay for it" be fulfilled by "Have Mexico pay to keep immigrants waiting in Mexico and start sending illegal immigrants back"?

I am a big believer in the saying "outcomes, not methods".

First this is not license to steal and cheat or the ends justify the means. Of course we have to play by the rules. The left is focused too much on methods and what Trump "says". What is needed now is for both sides to agree on what a win looks like. Then work together to achieve that. Again, when both sides are more concerned with the polar divide I fear this conversation will not happen.

As far as overall performance I am reminded of Jocko Willink's statement that there are only two kinds of leaders. Effective and Ineffective. I put Trump north of average when it comes to filling his promises. I would love him to settle down and keep putting plans and deals together to ensure our long and proud status of the greatest nation on earth.

>> In the land of the habitually offended Trump certainly keeps the snowflakes on their toes.

In this crazy mixed-up clown world full of Snowflakes and Flake-Flakes, President Donald Trump is the BLOW-TORCH of sanity.

I see President Trump has done what he can to keep his word, Congress and Senate have not given enough support to fulfill his plan to keep the U.S. a respectable country. For many years the U.S. has given financial support to the country of Mexico and the immigration problem has been ignored by both governments. He is also revealing the motivations of the Democrat Party, which is basically his campaign process. Deportation is an other story.

4

Didn't he kick off his 2020 campaign on January 20, 2017?

3

Trump’s 2020 election for his second term is America’s Hobson’s Choice!

We give him a Republican House, keep a Republican Senate or kiss our Constitutional Republic good bye.

It’s Trump or nothing for America.

3

Oh, well, guess it will be an easy win for Biden then. It's going to be a hot time in the old town when that happens. The democrats just have their finger on the pulse of American society, and they have mastered the science of history. Oh, well. Nothing we can do, I guess.

@KEWallace to make matters worse, the Stock market today is responding favorably to Trump's poor poll numbers. I was going to vote against Trump this time, but there's no reason to even leave the house on Election day.

@Facci You're absolutely right. Why don't you stay home and sit this one out. Better yet, gather up a bunch of your liberal friends and hold a "Laughing at Trump on Election Day" party. I'm sure it will be so much better than standing in those long-- uh, I mean SHORT-- those short lines at the polls. And you would have to rub elbows with all of those Deplorable people.

@jwhitten I'm having a liberal "I'm so confident that I don't even have to vote" party!

2

Alot of what any politition promises really depends on cooperation from the other branches. Like money for the wall has to come from the house. Appointments comes from the Senate for approval. It is a great system. The real problem is when the branches decide to not even negotiate with the other. Like today's democratic controlled house adopting the "resist" attitude.. They just fight everything Trump tries. They don't even negotiate or meet in good faith. It is really a miracle President Trump got anything done. Both democrats and Never Trumpet republicans fight what he does.

2

Trump's biggest weakness is that he'll lose to the first Democrat promising free Pooper-Scoopers...

@CanuckAmok And then after all of that you discover that it doesn't even scoop poop.

2

One of his weaknesses is that he has been ineffective in getting the Justice Department to prosecute operatives that have broken the law. Am looking forward to AG Barr’s reports coming out at the end of the month. That could have a significant affect on the campaign. When IG Horowitz released his report last wear, it got no traction because “everyone” was waiting the see Mueller’s report. It’s time to uncover how the DNC manipulated the last campaign. Does anyone have any insights into what the investigations will cover?

Yes, I am looking forward to seeing some PERP WALKS.

1

Strengths he does and did what he said he'd do, that's a big threat and exposes others. Teams up with Q and qanon. I'm surprised they not suicided him off yet.

1

God is with Trump, he will win again!!

1

Most of the vote will be against the democrats if a third party could get there stuff together we could have a new party in the office, the democrats are going the way of the federalist wigs.

God willing Amash will run...

He needs to stay on message, stop the ad hominem, and keep appointing judges. The 9th Circuit is perverting the Constitutional role of the judiciary branch to turn a lower court into a shadow presidency. Restoring the integrity of 3 coequal branches is imperative.

0

With the terrible burden to have the Congress with a majority of DemocRATS , only a fraction of promises were able to be fulfilled. Let’s vote out the useless cretins that are only good to warm up their seats. Then you will see what our POTUS can do!

0

The deficit will not go away just because somebody wants it to. The thought of growing government or taxing to the extent necessary to reduce ithe deficit is almost ridiculous. What has to happen although I don't know if we can do it, is that spending will have to come down.
The majority of US government spending is for medicare medicaid social security and welfare. That takes about 60% of the entire budget. It would not be reasonable to assume that an overall reduction can occur if we say that 60% of the expenditures are off limit.
The debt interest is about $500 billion per year and that will have to be covered.
US military is hard budget about 700 billion dollars.
2 trillion dollars or perhaps 2.2 trillion dollars is the social security and medicare and medicaid and welfare part. There is no chance of controlling the budget without reductions in those areas.
It is a difficult problem and will not be handled by just wanting someone else to pay for the deficit.
The total expenditure budget is about 4.9 trillion and the income is about 3.5 trillion.
If your family spends 50% more per year than you take in trouble will not be far away.

I would like Pres. Trump to focus on staying focused, stay on the talking points when he is making a point and be more precise in his speech. But that is not part if his authenticity. So, focus on the promises kept and if he hasn't been able to keep a promise, state the FACTS (less inflametory statements and name calling) about why he was not able to, e.g. "build the wall."

I think when Trump's done schooling the Democrats, we can hire someone who's diplomatic to run it. The left isn't done taking their own medicine yet. Trump was the ONLY person for this wickedly ugly job. Policy is just bonus. We needed him to fight the culture war and teach republicans how to fight back. Not confident about that last part. My god, they're wusses.

@chuckpo Do you want to punish me Chuckles? I've been a bad leftist.

No.

@Peter_Lemonjello That's up to Chuckles!

I like Trump better than Hillary, but he failed in regards to the deficit. He, like Barry both promised to fix it and then ignored it. Republicans and democrats have stuck us with trillions of debt and trillions more in promised payments in social security, Medicare etc. There was money for that but those parties spent a great deal of it already. I used to be a Republican, but the party failed me too many times to trust again. Billions for farm subsidies, to pay off voters in rural areas. Trillions spent defending nations who should be defending themselves. Trump has done some good stuff, but didn't even try to balance the budget, and leftist republicans like Susan Collins helped keep Barrycare in play, so nothing could be saved there.

I don't remember Trump promising to lower the deficit. I remember early on everyone talking about Trump specifically not lowering the deficit. He talked about getting better deals for the economy. Hard to argue he hasn't done that. But, he's a spender. Just about everyone is outside of Rand Paul, and I don't think many Republican voters would deny that.

You brought up Collins. I can't stand the coward Republicans who throw little bombs into the pathway. Flake and Corker were worse--McCain awful. Collins and that other female too--Murkowski?

@chuckpo Trump in 2016 (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-politics/wp/2016/04/02/transcript-donald-trump-interview-with-bob-woodward-and-robert-costa):

"DT: We’ve got to get rid of the $19 trillion in debt.

BW: How long would that take?

DT: I think I could do it fairly quickly, because of the fact the numbers . . . .

BW: What’s fairly quickly?

DT: Well, I would say over a period of eight years. And I’ll tell you why.

BW: Would you ever be open to tax increases as part of that, to solve the problem?

DT: I don’t think I’ll need to. The power is trade. Our deals are so bad."

@chuckpo And then of course the GOP used the magic of "dynamic scoring" to promise that the tax cuts would pay for themselves (they haven't).

@WilyRickWiles, Jesus dude, you just refuted your own quote. Did you read it?

I'm not going to help you understand the quotes you post yourself.

@chuckpo Is that because there's still five years left for Trump to eliminate that $19 trillion?

@WilyRickWiles, no.

@chuckpo Well thanks for the chuckle!

@WilyRickWiles, I'm sure you giggle when you discover you can control your own thumb. We done here?

@WilyRickWiles This is far from what candidate Trump told his supporters he would do:

In his official campaign launch address, Trump promised to “reduce our $18 trillion in debt,” which will not happen if annual deficits hit $1 trillion in two years.
On the campaign trail, Trump said he would “freeze the budget,” which has certainly not happened.
Shortly before his inauguration, he told Fox News host Sean Hannity that he would “balance the budget very quickly… I think over a five-year period. And I don’t know, maybe I could even surprise you.”
Previous to that, in March 2016, he told Bob Woodward that he could get rid of the debt “fairly quickly.” When pressed, he said, “Well, I would say over a period of eight years.” Since Trump took office, his own budget director called that promise “hyperbole.”
Trump asserted during the second presidential debate that he would bring back energy companies, which would make so much money that they could pay off the national debt. This has not happened.

Greatest strength is also his greatest weakness...dimentia

Don't you miss taxes?

Only everything west of Dallas.

I pay the same tax as before. But now I have a meaner America with a government nobody in the world respects. They may defer to the US due to their awesome military, but they’ve done that since 1991.

They think we’re the Roman empire and now we slip down to our own Tiberius. Who was once Crassus. How nice. A circus and games with the barbarians at the Mexican border, to entertain the masses. But only the Senate actually seems pleased. As SNAP and WIC contract there is less bread. Public works and infrastructure went out with Augustus Bill Clinton. Decay continues.

@Babou You would have to tie those references together in a more realistic manner for anyone to understand what you are saying. You can't conflate humans born millennia apart, and suggest that what you are saying is factually true. Subjugation is not respect. It is not our military other nations fear, it is the loss of our buying power. I wouldn't vote on the basis of the U.N.'s tastes, because they never have the U.S.'s national interest as a priority. Of course our enemies would prefer a Democrat president, certainly they all do.

@Babou I will agree that Leftists groups like Antifa are exceedingly mean and violent. That will end.

0

It is going to be so awesome to pay more in taxes again. I miss that.

Yeah, now that unemployment is at a RECORD LOW, people will be needing to pay tax on their newly-acquired incomes.

0

He will likely energize his base but it won't matter. Unless the Democrats alienate their base as bad as they did in 2016, they will have more than enough people to win just as they did for the 2018 midterms.

It feels so good to be so sure about it.

@Facci Raise your hand, if you're Sure.
