Apparently, the first catch of the new year signifies greatly to the Japanese fishermen. The New Year tuna auction started more than 80 years ago and it has become tradition. Maybe this is the only time when they are allowed to catch bluefin tuna? I don't know.
@Naomi Judging how the Japanese conduct whaling for "scientific purposes", I would tend to believe that they will hunt whatever to extinction to satisfy their market.
