Coronavirus: Is it time to panic?
[reason.com]

Media say yes, experts say no. Covid-19, known as the coronvirus, will wreak widespread changes on American society and usher in "the end of affluence politics," suggests Matt Stoller in Wired. "Disruption to everyday life might be severe," Nancy Messonnier of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warned on Tuesday. On Wednesday, President Donald Trump announced that Vice President Mike Pence would be the coronavirus czar.

Cases continue to rise in China, South Korea, Japan, Italy, and Iran, with new cases cropping up in Austria, France, Germany, Greece, Switzerland, and elsewhere. And countries around the world are shutting down schools and travel in response.

Influenza is a virus we have battled for years and continue to battle and it continues to be responsible for a much higher percentage of fatalities. We should anticipate such ongoing battles and respond as best able however over reaction and panic would be far more dangerous.
Much more interesting and potentially dangerous is the presumed right to incarceration others. Detaining an individual against their will should not be done lightly or without fully justified reason.
Pictures from China show individuals being dragged from their homes to be interned in make shift camps and doors on buildings being welded up to prevent residents leaving. Shocking, even for a communist country but hardly mentioned. Westerners are now being interned in hotels overseas and told they cannot leave the building or even leave their rooms. These are people who do not have the virus but where others have decided they could have it. Who should be able to play god and hand out such instruction? Have they the mandate to sacrifice some to save others? personally I'd prefer to deal with the virus than be tightly controlled by foreign bureaucrats.

I just read in the morning [28/4/20] news paper here that Israeli scientists should have a vaccine ready in three weeks. I'll bet the BDS leftards will be the first in line to get vaccinated.

The media is framing blame on Trump for the coronavirus. Trump or anyone else has never experienced a pandemic as this has never happened in anyone's lifetime. In California it looks like warm weather has been a backstop for the spread of the coronavirus.

In Iran they are actively spreading it because of cultural practices. Iran's government is intentionally taking no containment measures, sanctioning no behavioral changes or materially supporting medical interventions. Iran has limited medical infrastructure. We are going to see what doing every possible thing wrong at once does, Iran will demonstrate a worst case scenario.

When the media gets it wrong, which is most of the time, they face no consequences for their mistakes. Creating panic to insight complaint and blame will not have much personal usefulness.

This is a oversimplified worse case calculation
Iran has a population of 79.11 million
With an R0 of 5.6
Incubation time of 4.2 days
Starting number of 141 cases,

Cases――――――――――――Time in Days
xxx―――――――――――――――0
141―――――――――――――――4.2
790―――――――――――――――8.4
4,422――――――――――――――12.6
24,762―――――――――――――16.8
138,666―――――――――――――21.9
776,532―――――――――――――25.0
4,348,578――――――――――――29.4
24,352,037―――――――――――33.6
136,371,409―――――――――――37.8

Worst case death rate in Iran:
Iran's population is 79.11 million
60% of Iran's population likely to get infected 47.6 million
5% death rate from of 47.46 million
2.37 million dead in Iran

The USA should probably be a bit more cautious but will rapidly adjust if needed, it will not be like Iran in the USA.

No one is materially ready for a large percentage of the population to get sick all at once, how could anyone be.

Media fearmongering actually can be useful if it causes people make preparations and take swift action when needed.

Panic to insight complaint and blame has a palliative effect for the anti Trumpers so its not completely useless.

The Iran guess is a liner extrapolation, its not realistic as there will be many other variables that come into play. But it seems at this point in time Iran is creating a worse case.

In the USA we have been doing quarantine and it has worked. So far we have stopped the corona-virus from spreading with quarantine measures and the luck of warm weather.

This is the biggest nothing ball I've ever seen. The media should be ashamed for fear mongering.

Supply chains.

That is the only real worry we should be focused on.

Me, I pray it mutates to be as deadly as the Plague.

It's not the symptoms that are super concerning, unless you have compromised immune system, it's how contagious it is. You can head it off by using elderberry tincture. Elderberry actually retards virus ability to replicate so that your immune system doesn't get overwhelmed. Add oregano that is both supportive of lung function and antibacterial for the concern for pneumonia and you are pretty good.

I'm not saying to ignore the conventional medicines either, stock up on whatever you prefer if you are concerned about your area. We have Nyquil, advil and vicks here.

While my family is only anecdotal, elderberry has been so effective at my house that my husband who won't touch herbs is now using it.

Awesome. So oregano, elderberry and I would add hot honey teas. Cheers

When conditions are right it is much more contagious than anything you have likely ever encountered before.

@MosheBenIssac how contagious something is matters when it comes to impacting business because high % of sickness can shut down schools and businesses for a time. It doesn't matter that much for the individual when the symptoms and risks are generally mild. I stated that it's very contagious but all that means for the individual is that you probably want to be more on top of preventative measures. People who are immune compromised usually already know what they need to do to protect themselves and what illnesses are more or less concerning for their issues. For example, my friend with cystic fibrosis is super careful with anything that effects the lungs even a little, because she has to be.

I'm watching Fox News right now and they're saying things look pretty bleak. Apparently the only place without a case of the virus is in Antarctica.

I've been listening to most of the major news sources to see what they all have to say, in order to maybe get a bigger picture on the matter so to speak, and most of them are saying the same thing regarding a bleak outlook...
