The law that killed freelance work...
[reason.com]

Freelance jobs are "feudalism," says Democratic California Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez.

She persuaded California's legislature to pass a new law reclassifying freelance workers as employees. That means many people who hire them must now give them benefits like overtime, unemployment insurance, etc. Politicians said it would help freelancers a lot.

Of course, much of the media agreed. Vox called it "a victory for workers everywhere"!

Sigh. Young reporters just don't understand that stifling economic freedom always creates nasty side effects.

Figures something like that would be going on in the state of California...

Actually the “media” didn’t pay all that much attention to the Bill.
They took a look at it, decided it was about Uber Drivers, yawned and didn’t finish reading it.
Now “media types” are all up in arms because the Bill screwed thousands of them as many are “paid contributors” and not employees.
I believe the rule is that if they submit 34 items a year, they are to be considered “employees” ... most contribute much more often than that ... or did, but now the publishers are simply dropping them as they are not willing to take on a huge staff of “independent writers”.
