The Borgias is the most infamous family of Renaissance Italy, and their history frequently hinges around four key individuals: Pope Calixtus III, his nephew Pope Alexander IV, his son Cesare, and his daughter Lucrezia. Thanks to the actions of the middle pair, the family name is associated with greed, power, lust, and murder.

The Borgias got bad press because they were Spanish rather than Italian or French and because their popes came riiiight before protestantism really took hold. They had Savonarola killed eventually.

The Clintons can be considered the last corrupt presidency before the internet really became full of people who gave a damn about politics. The list of mysterious deaths around the Clintons is longer than the mysterious deaths around the Kennedys - that should register with people.

We would not know anything about the Borgias without Niccolò Machiavelli.
