He refuted the claim that the 9/11 terrorists were "cowards" since they had the guts to sacrifice their lives for their cause, rather than America which lobs missiles at countries from 2000 miles away. For that, the Conservatives attacked him and got his sponsors to withdraw and he lost his TV show. Much like the Dixie Chicks at the time. Remember when Conservatives were the one boycotting and canceling people?
