Many songs have hidden meanings in their lyrics, which can be open to interpretation or just downright confusing. Here are some examples of popular songs with hidden meanings:
"Closing Time" by Semisonic - The song is often played at bars and clubs as a signal for patrons to leave, but it was actually written about the birth of lead singer Dan Wilson's daughter.
"Imagine" by John Lennon - While the song is often seen as a peaceful anthem, Lennon himself admitted that it was basically a "Communist Manifesto."
"Every Breath You Take" by The Police - The song is often played at weddings and other romantic events, but it is actually about a stalker watching his ex-lover.
"Total Eclipse of the Heart" by Bonnie Tyler - The song is often seen as a romantic ballad, but Tyler has said that she doesn't know what it's about.
"London Calling" by The Clash - The song is often seen as a call to arms for the punk movement, but it was actually written about the impending apocalypse.
"American Pie" by Don McLean - The song is often seen as a tribute to Buddy Holly and other musicians who died in a plane crash, but it is also a commentary on the changing times of the 1960s.
"Harder to Breathe" by Maroon 5 - The song is often seen as a catchy pop song, but it is actually about the frustrations of the music industry.
"Delilah" by Tom Jones - The song is often seen as a romantic ballad, but it is actually about a man who threatens to kill his lover if he catches her with another man.
"Watermelon Sugar" by Harry Styles - The song is often seen as a fun summer anthem, but it is actually incredibly sexual in nature.
"Empty Spaces" by Pink Floyd - The song contains a hidden message when played backwards, which says "Congratulations. You've just discovered the secret message. Please send your answer to Old Pink, care of the Funny Farm, Chalfont."
These are just a few examples of songs with hidden meanings in their lyrics. Many other songs have been misinterpreted or have deeper meanings that are not immediately apparent.

Did you ever hear that song from Billy Joel called Captain Jack? That one often gets misinterpreted. My favorite song from Joel by the way.
