Collectivism versus Individualism: where do you stand? I support individualism.

Isn’t this a false dichotomy? Is it really either/or?
Not at all. We are often led to believe there is only a battle between right and left/Republican vs Democrat/conservative against liberal, when in reality I think the true struggle is between collectivists and individualists.
I think of myself as an individualist. But it's hard to ignore that humans, by nature, have both individualistic and tribal/collective instincts.
It's a question of putting the right thing in the right place... If we're talking about our legal system, the individual is prime. If we're talking about your family, church, community, etc... if we're not talking about government compulsion... then we can and should allow the collective good to have some more influence.
The issue is not community, it's compulsion. I feel like those on my own end of the political spectrum (the libertarian types) might forget that sometimes.
I like the idea of collectivism but it'll only work with small numbers unfortunately or a homogeneous nation of people.
Thats the problem with collectivist ideas, they sound great on paper but are unable to achieve thier goals. Little c communism at a neighborhood/community/even family level seems pretty natural and productive. I am interested to see if big C capitalism and little c communism can be married to maybe solve some of our issues as a culture and country.
I’m with you bro!
Good to know I'm not alone on that.
