I know this happened over a month ago, but I still thought this was a good story-

Wow, this certainly proves the heights and depths that humans can go to doesn't it? All within one moment in time. Rather like politics in North America!
Hopefully, the shutdown showed how massive and out of control the federal government has become. There are many contracts that could be made with private companies to do much of the work that the federal employees are doing. Homeland security is huge and private companies can do what TSA does; I believe that TSA contracts a private company for San Francisco airport. Additionally, why can't the work done by the USDA and the FDA be done by private companies?
Probably because the same sort of outrageous price gouging situation would occur as has happened with private medical providers.
@Phoenix I would disagree with you. If there is sufficient competition for the available work then companies will strive for the lowest bid to get the contract. I fear and I don't know for sure but; we may have a shortage of medical professionals in the United States which would drive the value of their skill up.
@PatriciaBurger I take your point, it may have more to do with the cost of insurance than shortage of professionals as well.
I do know that some medical clinics which supply CAT scans and MRIs here (which are covered under our provincial health care) has a starting waiting list of 18 months. Unless you offer to pay for it yourself...and lo and behold... "Would next Tuesday work for you?"
And got at least cited if not arrested for it. Chalk another one up for big government
