The 1st Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America states : " Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

Is the president abusing his office or should we be more concerned with blue haired college kids that give Milo & Ben Shapiro a hard time ???

I don't engage much on Sundays with news, or at least I try not to. So I am not sure what the SNL v Trump matter is specifically about. But when we discuss Liberty, especially those rights expressly enumerated in our Bill of Rights, I think a comparison of what is worse is not as useful as taking any threat to free speech from anyone in a vacuum and calling that individual or group out specifically.

I am not trying to throw shade on the question, but two things can be a threat at the same time and I don't find it useful in choosing which is worse. So if a President, any President, is acting in a way to place a chilling effect in speech he, or in the future possibly she, should be called out. If a college student or a group of college students are acting in a way to also place a chilling effect on speech, the individual or group also should be called out.

The President is using His Right of Freedom of Speech ... and Religion. The fact that he calls the media and various people “out” ... or “fake” or encourages removal of rude or boisterous reporters, notwithstanding, he doesn’t prohibit ANY form of “speech”. He simply tells them they’re being STUPID.
In fact, out of ALL the Presidents, We the US Citizenry know MUCH More about this President’s thought process.
Truthfully, despite all their caterwauling, the Press has NEVER had anywhere near as much “access” and “transparency’ than in this President.

The “College Kids” ... through their riots and boisterous protests are actively seeking to shut down talks, speeches, intellectual conversations ... THEY are seeking to DENY Others Their Right of Free Speech ...
In actuality, the “College Kids” are in the Wrong.

I don’t believe his tweets were entirely serious, given the fact that he accused them of colluding with Russia. If he were to order some kind of investigation into them that would be a different story, but it would be a tall order indeed for a President to “abuse his office” on twitter.

Just posted a sterling comment about this that disappeared when I hit the submit button. Here's a very condensed version...

SNL is exercising their right to free speech. Trump exercises HIS right to free speech to knock SNL's free speech rights. Though some Trump supporters see this push-back as courageous, I call it stupid. He's feeding the trolls, and making himself look idiotic in doing so. All the people I talk to who voted for Trump make the same complaint about Trump, that they wish he would comport himself more professionally (or be "more presidential" ). But his rebellious behavior is what endeared him to many voters.

Trump made enough enemies when he was elected on a platform which included, "draining the swamp". Many of these enemies are people within the republican party who are fearful of losing the 'status-quo'.

Never-Trumpers who are on the fence (if there are any like this) might be pushed over to the wrong side by this behavior. I would be more worried about this from a general public point of view if it weren't for the fact that the democrat party has gone bat-shit crazy.

To the point of the OP, Trump must not go down the path of censorship. That would turn me against him.

Politics is supposed contentious take a look at what the Lawyers have given us so far, being polite while they Rob the citizens blind, worrying about refugees while letting our people and especially veterans suffer, " Political Correctness " over truth. Trump is doing his job and when he sees shit he labels it.

@Dresden Politics are contentious, yes. But censorship is tyranny.

The college kids are a greater concern...

College kids don't have Executive powers. I would think Libertarians would be screaming at the possibility of Trump censoring free speech.

@theanimalside They can stir up violence though (ANTIFA)...

@SpikeTalon Agreed. But so can others when it comes to losing Constitutional rights. Sure, the radicals on the extreme left have been proven to use violence, but the extremists on the right have the potential to turn violent as well.
This article is stupid, but it's out there...
[thenation.com]

@theanimalside I had considered doing a stand alone post on that topic. You are correct, those on the far right are capable of the same.

@theanimalside true but trump can only serve one more term. Those college kids can do a lot of damage and there are no checks and balances facing them.

@Chicago If he gets re-elected.

I don't know... mostly what I see from college kids is a lot of yelling and screaming. Antifa is a different story but I wonder if their club has members that are actually still in school. Plus, I think violent and/or destructive acts by Antifa should be dealt with by the police. Assault and vandalism is against the law and these people should be arrested. The Constitution is clear about "peaceful assembly" in the first amendment. Antifa is violating the law and infringing on the rights of others.

The damage college kids can do might be more related to ideology. The trend seems to be growing whereby leftist ideologies and identity politics are gaining ground in universities. It's difficult to come up with a counter to that, especially if university administrators and professors are of the same political bent. So I think damage is being done on an ongoing basis in universities, from what I'm hearing. When college professors and high school teachers are promoting leftist ideologies, and these make up the majority of the academic brain trust, we should expect kids to act accordingly. My hope is that sites like this one, and Youtube videos of long-form discussions with people like Jordan Peterson, the Weinstein brothers, Ben Shapiro, Dave Rubin, and even Sam Harris (sorry, Sam) will inspire kids to realize they've been ripped-off by the current education system. The problem right now, as i see it, is these free-thinkers in the IDW are discounted out of hand because of the labels attached to them. A kid that wants to grow would be told by his friends, "Don't listen to Jordan Peterson. He's just an alt-right, gender-phobic, misogynist, racist, entitled white guy." What can a kid do with that? If there was any sense of curiosity, then he would want to find out for himself. So I think promotion and marketing are key. Jordan Peterson on Dr. Oz for example. That gave Peterson and his rational ideas a great boost in the public. We need more of that kind of thing.

Wow... rambling again. Sorry.

Students on college campuses shouting down or otherwise preventing expression by others is counter to the spirit of "free speech."

Trump calling out blatant bias and lies by media outlets is not.
