I came to this website looking for something such as a relatively balanced perspective. Certainly, any social media site will swing one way or another based on the individuals posting most. I was also looking for ongoing respectful dialogue, such as is promoted by members of the IDW in their podcasts, Etc.

What I didn't expect to find was a site that, in its inception, is anti-left wing. Having a question in profile options of whether you are a social justice Warrior is a perfect example of pejorative language targeting the left.

In my experience, I've found that the left and the right have become more extreme, and less moderate, less balanced. I guess my question is, is this site one which is part of the solution or part of the problem?

I'm not quite sure what category I should choose for this, as it is politically motivated, strategic, and philosophical.

I welcome you to agree, disagree, or simply elucidate. Thanks ahead of time for your time and thoughts.

I think that much of the "anti left wing" behavior you're speaking of is mostly in response to the fact that, as of late in popular culture and in prominent social media, the "left wing" has just been awful. There's probably a bit of pent up frustration that may be coming to light.

And, I don't necessarily believe that social justice warrior is a pejorative as many of those on the left seem to proudly own it.

Two things come to mind that are certainly true:

  1. Much of the popular culture and prominent social media, along with huge internet players are hostile to those who want to discuss issues in a manner beyond that of the conventional--dare I say SJW--orthodoxical paradigm. Notice I didn't say "target the right". Although the right is surly targeted, it's not just the right. It's the right, left, center; anyone who questions or pushes back against the orthodoxy. Which is why you see well known people on the left speaking up, Eric Weinstien for example.

  2. We have absolutely zero control over how others behave. The only thing we have any control over is how we react to the behavior of others.

With that in mind, it may be a suggestion to employ behaviors that we wish to see in others and that foster intellectual honesty. And to simply ignore those who do not. Granted, that can be difficult; for me, anyway (that's a whole other discussion).

I believe the rest will take care of itself, as it were.

@ObiRonMoldy Great question and great points.

Personally, I cringe a little when "alt-right" or "social justice warrior" are thrown out as epithets.

The far left and far right have also become like religious Puritanism

If you agree on 95% but that 5% where you are "wrong" makes you 100% reprobate

Using religious terms here because they are acting religious
