Hi all,
I am currently writing a paper for university.
Topic : free will vs determinism.
Any reference material worth a look, please let me know.
Also if anyone would like to define each aspect briefly, it would be great, along with your position on the argument.
Just so I can get a gauge on the split.
Thx in advance
Determinism is akin to predestination in the Christian belief system. In that, what is and what will be are beyond the individual’s control.
Free-will is a belief that everything I encounter is a byproduct of my choices and that my existence looks the way it does because of the decisions I have made.
I think it’s a combination of both. I believe that the “end” and the “beginning” have already been written but that I have a choice and that everything I do shapes a story that has already been told…only I haven’t read it yet.
Wow. What a topic. You could write a 500+ page book on this topic. Hell, you could write a trilogy. Determinism is supported by both genetic and environmental factors. You parents are smart? You are more likely to be smart. You parents are wealthy and educated you are more likely to be smart. Then there is the free will aspect in my own statements above. Likely is not guaranteed ... and ergo free will, and chaos slip into the universe.
Compatibilism is the belief that free will and determinism are mutually compatible and that it is possible to believe in both without being logically inconsistent. ... They define free will as freedom to act according to one's motives without arbitrary hindrance from other individuals or institutions. I believe in this myself
