Freedom of Speech is a bed rocks of Wester Civilization, and so much more than all of the other God given rights, that are part of US heritage. Freedom of Speech, and speech in genera,l is what allows each of us to create habitable order from potential. Our individual respective sparks of divinity permit us to continue the Creation process. To speak is to think and to think, and be conscious, is to exist.

Where does god say we have the right to free speech?

Does the government give me my right to free speech? Perhaps they simply give me the idea of free speech. Now that the cat is out of the bag they can't take back. I believe I have the right to free speech regardless of the law, now that the idea has been implanted. Therefore, it is a self given right, yes?

Sorry to disillusion you, but all "rights" are relative in that the rights in question exist on a temroary basis, to wit, as long as one or more rights are recognized and "enforced" by some secular authority. Don't depend on God or any gods to uphold your rights, ain't gonna happen in this world. We as a society can give ourselves and other members of that society whatever rights we wish, including the right to be stupid. And just as we can give we can take such rights away.

Oh, but I have self given rights. Good luck with that when other do not agree. You see, our common rights, of which we take as granted and yet are not, are communal, they depend on cooperation. True, some individuals believe that they are entitled to rights the rest of us do not believe exist but we will give them to if you you keep quiet. But force the issue and you will find that your supposed rights are transient at best. That is how societies work.

@Marta-Amance

No disillusion received. Community recognition is only a part of the equation. A community is made up of individuals and when a enough individuals come to the same conclusion, it's only a matter of how far they willing to go to fight for said rights. Doesn't even require a majority. It starts at the individual level and works it's way outward. Of course there are many outside (of the individual) influencing factors, but it comes down to each individual to make a decision.

Freedom of speech is great as an ideal, as a principle of governing ourselves, as a means to promote social harmony. The reality of the world suggests otherwise. Why would I say such a thing? Look at the social media of the various elements of societies in the world. The films, the music, the literature that the average individuals buys, views, or hears is all very ordinary, mediocre, if you like. In a word, it has become the alter of tribalism. But, but, but....We are all individuals. Sure you are and you seek association with other like-minded individuals and look up to those is espouse the values you find attractive and thus form hierarchies of believing ideology rather than the merits of individual thoughts through discourse.

No, I must break this myth that freedom of speech is the be all and end all of great societies and civilizations. Those individuals who are capable of independent thought and are capable of the articulation of such thought are the ones who typically have need of freedom of speech. Ideas need expression in words and even deeds. Emotions, those feelings which drive the average individual through their lives are only vague expressions of ideas and lend themselves to rash actions.

"To speak is to think and to think, and to be conscious, is to exist", a most noble ideal that few of us do well and most hardly at all. As for God given rights, it is proper to ask whose God. The answer is My God and for those who do not believe you must settle for man given rights. Please not, I am not a believer in any god, simply pointing out the obvious. We humans look for a higher authority from which we may take our rights. Some find that higher authority in a god while others trust to a government or two. It is human establishments that vouch safe or not such rights, that bestow them in some pleasing manner or not, that define what the majority is capable of supporting, or not. When the majority has no say, no role in supporting such rights then the government will retract them at will. We call that dictatorship.

Hence, even the common man, the everyday man must at least passively support his government in securing his rights and the rights of others. We call this cooperation within the species and without it the species dies. Thus those who seek to abrogate the rights of others simply because others do not agree with their tribal ideology seek their own death as well. Call it what it rightfully is, murder suicide.

I would very much like to participate in a rational adult exchange based upon this post. No direspect, but it is weak, disjointed word salad at best. Just a random ramble of nothing. I am at a loss to comment or engage. There are words. There are sentences. The grammar and punctuation are fine. Coherence, some cognitive thread or rational argument? Not so much. Sorry. Webster could use it as an example of blather. To summarize:. You are an atheist who does not believe that Freedom of Speech is a bed rock right. A revelation. Yawn

@monteray98 No disrespect intended, but would you please define what you mean by a rational adult exchange based on your post? Perhaps you expected a 500 word essay form of debate where I formally posit a position for or against your position complete with my proposition, my arguments and supporting logic and reason, and final conclusion. You do know that this is social media and that your blog post is just that? To presume that you get to dictate the required form of response tells me that you are on the wrong website. The siple rule of social media is that when you post a comment, you get what you get. If you do not like the responses, don't post your comments. There are a great many websites that you can join for the rational adult exchange you so crave.

@Marta-Amance Marta, you are correct. With Social Media (SM), you get what you get in the way of responses. If my first response to you was a bit snarky and negative, I apologize. However, I am always looking for those few golden nuggets on SM. I try to put my best articulate, not so stupid face forward. Occasionally there is a good, intelligent, cognitive, insightful exchange. Not always. I figure if I shoot for the moon, I just might make it to the roof top, which is still better than sitting in the mud. Regards.
