I just finished reading George Orwell's 1984 book.

I have to say, the book's reputation is no joke.

Crazy bleak.

1984 is actually based on reality. The reality of 2019.

It sure is . The kind of bleak your morning coffee can't fix .

Funny story: I don't drink coffee o:

@E-E-E Some people have the luxury of not needing a jump start in the morning .

Atlas Shrugged. Is a great book as well

I'll check that out.

Great book. I remember in college reading it and thinking the premise was a bit far fetched. Incompetence and corruption so staggering that the society let basic things like transportation fail needlessly? People so stupid they would believe the most ridiculous and obviously false things?

I don't think the premise is far fetched anymore.

Try Brave New World by Aldus Huxley next or Animal Farm by Orwell!

I intend to read them both along with Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury.

Back in the olden days (1965-66) our 6th grade elementary teacher read Animal Farm to the class. 1984 was required reading in an 8th grade history class. Older people are familiar with these ideas. That is why the current culture is so shocking to us. We know where this "zeitgeist" leads.

Yes, Brave New World and Animal Farm are essential. The more elegant and less obvious authoritarianism of BNW is more akin to what we're seeing I think, though from time to time Orwell pops in to say hello.

@DrCDurham Wow Doc,glad your on our side! We need more people like you to spread, the word, and pray for our country!

@DrCDurham, @E-E-E A great classic!

@DrCDurham Wow! According to my American boyfriend of the same age from Boston, your education seems to have been atypical (maybe a private school?)

Yes, the older generation will always recognize dangerous trends in society more than the young - that's why it's dangerous for the young to be the majority like us Baby Boomers were. I hold us responsible for a lot of destructive things like the drug plague, socialism, etc. Many us had common sense but we were bullied, ostracized, over-powered, out-shouted by the Left. Now the left seem to control the media and the young are getting brainwashed in their ideology.

But I have hope; young people are reading dystopian novels (or seeing the movies) like The Hunger Games, the Divergent series, The Maze, etc. This may lead them to the classics and alert them to the dangers of an authoritarian gov't. BUT... Americans seem to have a wanna-be dictator for a president right now. You can't blame the Left for Trump.

@acadian I'm an early 20's millennial and enjoy reading. A hobby of mine.

I also read partially out of personal responsibility because I want to be able to learn what my college doesn't teach and what high school hasn't taught me. Furthermore, I read to be armed with knowledge.

@DrCDurham Very intriguing. I wish my generation were disciplined to read books like those. My generation can be embarrassing I know. Fortunately, I purposely commit to learning what the older generation knows for common sense reasons and to set myself apart from the unenlightened crowd of people my age so that patriots will know I am not like the whiny bunch of ignorant millennial's out there.
