Sometimes i post things and then i can't figure out how to go back to my posts etc. I am wondering how you others are finding the idw comunity.

I don't text, don't do Twitter, don't do face book, don;t have a smart phone. Never saw the need for all that stuff.

I was shadow banned on twitter after a fellow academic asked an honest question of why anyone would have voted for President Trump. I wrote an honest reply on my reasons and got jumped on by followers and non-followers alike. After a prospective parent called the university to demand I be fired, I figured the collateral damage to students was not worth the trouble. Enough folks reported and blocked my account that I was shadow banned. Not much of a loss. I left Facebook right after the 2016 election after an administrator invited me to lunch to discuss my vote. Unfortunately for my colleagues, I don't feel angry at the treatment, just apathetic.

Holy crap, that's life altering, your vote should be private, wow that's a terrible thing to happen, all because of a comment. I hope you have recovered, I'm actually shocked!

@Tabithakitten Thanks... I understand the importance of a "chilling effect" on speech, but for me it has resulted in a growth in apathy. I've always been all about personal freedom, but in younger days that was mixed with a misplaced White Knight complex to try to "save" people from what I perceived as destructive misconceptions. As I grow older, I just move on and let folks reap what they sow. It has enabled me to concentrate on what is truly important -- providing the best education I can for my students.

So far I find this site to be quite interesting.

I’m really liking it. Still working out how things work myself, and look forward to the next round of privileges with the rising levels. I like that it encourages civil debate while also allowing for a range of views, although I’m aware that it is a predominantly conservative population. I’ve only seen some instances of angst and that seems to have come from what I understand is the 2% who identify as SJW. No doubt they’d be frustrated pretty quickly when faced with a barrage of like-minded counter-argument.

The only other thing I’ve found recently is that, as a non-uni educated person, I don’t feel that I can keep up with a lot of arguments and conversations. I have an interest and an opinion on most things, but often don’t have what’s required to be profound on a subject or the necessary depth of knowledge to support my views. This is making me a bit gun-shy about posting - on this forum you’ll be called out if you’re spouting rubbish, or making claims that really are just an emotional response to an issue. This is all a good thing, of course; it’s just that I don’t like being argued against, and then being proven wrong!

I know, I'm pussy footing too, I'm also non university. To be honest, as far as I know, you can get in way terrible trouble on Twitter. Ive seen some very severe shaming, in one instance it was just because the guy posted his opinion on an account (a female journalist) she did not appreciate his
Opinion. Omgosh hundreds of tweeters jumped on him, I felt bad for the guy. It was really bad... kind of turned me off of Twitter too.

@Tabithakitten, I’ve never tweeted in earnest but have heard enough about how nasty it is. Why I like this platform so much.

I see no signs of censorship. In fact I see policies that require the users to censor themselves - I'm still wondering how that's going to work out long term, but I'm liking it so far. Click on the different "counts" on your home page to filter your content - makes previous posts easier to find.

I've run into a bit of censorship by a member of the community. Here's how I THINK that works. Someone starts a thread, and you comment on it. Then, you get in a back and forth, and that member--the thread starter--blocks you. He's unable to see your posts and you're unable to see his. But, he started the thread, so you're out. That one person made a decision that potentially impacts others in addition to you, IF others are following the conversation--or even participating. AND, since it's a somewhat non-transparent process, it's kind of confusing. Not a big deal, but it does bump into censorship, I think.
