The war against Russia is much, much more then eastern Ukraine. Russia has made their economic intentions clear. They plan to move off the US dollar as the global trade currency, and they plan to implement a gold-backed currency. Gold-backed currencies are virtually immune from the Basel III currency/trading schema and more importantly, can be freely and openly traded around the world with other gold-backed currency because of the stable price of gold as an exchange value (Silver, Platinum and other commodities or rare earth minerals could be used in place of gold but let's not complicate it right now.)
