State of the news. There is no news. Before the 70s news was a public service provided by the big networks. It's job was to report events occurring in the world in a purely factual manner by carefully choosing words that described but did not color the subject and by researching the veracity of the material. Then in the 70s satellite tv stations started getting popular and did serious damage to network viewership by cutting into their revenue. What had once been a public service had to become a profit center. If your news did not capture and keep eyeballs it was not presented. With the advent of the internet it became easy and cheap to set up a news site that had no restrictions of any kind. What we have now is innumerable outlets spewing propaganda from either a left or right point of view. Reading the same story from either political viewpoints you get completely different information. Air only the things that support your viewpoints and ignore the rest. There is no longer a source of factual information and we are the poorer for it.

Nice historical accounting of how we got here.

"The News" turned from reporting "Facts" as they happen to "journalism" telling stories attracting attention for the gain of viewers seeing advertising for the profit of broadcast. Congress playing with the meaning of words in the 1a calling the telling of lies and slander to be "Free Speech" allowing the protection of false statements to be published. "We the People" need to remind the "Media" that "Free Speech" is "Publishing" the trueth.
