Just as the Barbary Pirates of North Africa 220 years ago, todays pirates are driven as much by ideology as by greed.

I believe that ideology is way down on the priority list for thieves. Some ideologies might require a bit of honor, thievery requires none.
@lawrenceblair Some ideologies require dishonorable treatment of "infidels."
