A few years ago, a serving army officer of unusual courage published an essay—in Armed Forces Journal no less—in which he charged that "a private who loses a rifle suffers far greater consequences than a general who loses a war." The charge stung because it was irrefutably true then and it remains so today.

If leaders are not held to account they will not do their job as it is described in their contracts and oath. I'm not advocating for eliminating all paths to redemption, hell Nimitz was the best we had in the Navy in WWII and his first time conning a ship saw him run it aground. No, what I mean is that those who attain flag rank ought to be held to a higher standard than those of the rank and file. If they fail the consequences are more dire than those from losing a rifle on the battlefield.
