From personal experience I can tell you this is true. I can also tell you, if you use your experience from your time dealing with and surviving life with a nassicist you can become stronger, and better because of them. You control you!

One was placed on her rightful spot by few words -said on public- about her schooling. The other one never saw me again. We exchanged snail mails, phone calls and the likes...but never saw me again.
People are able to hurt you if and only you allow them to do so.

A narcissists greatest weapon is gasslighting. They challenge your reality to make you unsure of yourself, they are often unsure of themselfs and rely on codependently using you to make up their own bottomless pit of insecurity. They often find very empathetic people who will willingly fill this need, not realizing the trouble they are getting themselfs into until it's too late.
I think narcissism and empaths are at ether end of the spectrum of mental health disorders. They both are unbalanced in their own way and often could learn something from each other, but rairly do. The narcissist rairly learns anything (except maybe how to be a better narcissist) and the empath usually learns to stay away from narcissists, and the value of keeping their peace of mind intact.
But the balance rairly evens out and if they manage to separate they usually take their own problems with them, repeating the process to different degrees in new relationships.
We live out the same problems over and over again until we learn our lessons. We bring the same truama into our lives until we resolve it. And sometimes the empath turns into the narcissist, repeating the patterns of abuse without even realizing it. Protecting their own fragility while hurting those around them with unhealthy coping mechanisms.

Great comment put someone who resist a narcissist such as myself in any situation. And the attempt of a narcissistic personality to achieve their goal is futile. The goal can be one many things, for many reasons, tried in many ways, by many tactics, through many people etc.
