Is it possible to be pro-choice and anti-suicide? Wouldn't suicide be the ultimate choice of what to do with your body?

I kind of like to look at it more economically. A grown woman is the result of decades of resources not only from her family but from society (public schools among many social programs). A fetus is a bunch of cells that if nurtured could become a contributing member of society in a few decades.
So you can be pro choice, because if that woman can't support a child and doesn't want to, then it's going to end up a larger drain on a number of resources and social systems. You can also be anti-suicide because it is a waste of all the resources that a person's family as well as civilization as a whole has poured into them.

A fetus is not a bunch of cells, that would be an embryo. The argument for abortion is "my body my choice". But wow...never knew about the borg perspective "our effort our choice".

@Freeken1 Everyone is a bunch of cells. That's what humans are made out of. I can understand not wanting to abort the baby once it can viably live outside the womb. But that kind of abortion is extremely rare and usually done because the has some sort of birth defect that will it upon birth, or there is some pregnancy complication that will probably the woman. We don't usually consider how dangerous pregnancy is due to modern medicine. Also how expensive deliveries can be.

@criminey359 at the point that a fetus is viable there is no medical necessity to abort that . In order to have an abortion at that point you killed a and then either have to induce labor or do a C-section to remove it. There is no medical Advantage or reason for the to be dead in order to do that you could just induce labor or do a C-section.

Pro choice simply means allowing others to make their own decisions without anyone else getting involved telling them what to do. I'm pro choice when it comes to the abortion debate, regardless of the fact I think that's a horrid method of birth control.

So when does the child get a say? At 6 weeks a human brain causes a human heart to beat. Before that I can accept a choice. By 8-10 weeks when they have working organs, wiggly fingers and toes I am not as cool with it. By the 3rd trimester the viability of the child is over 90% what gives the right to end that life?

@Freeken1 What adult human being has the right to take the life of another adult human being? Yet such occurs on a daily basis. Is that fair? Of course not, but it happens anyway. Who is going to patrol/watchover every single pregnant woman on this planet to make sure none of them will attempt to abort after six weeks? Life begins when the fetus is separated from the mother and functions on its own thus becoming an independent being. Simply put, we cannot force women to carry a fetus if they no longer want to, it's an ugly reality in life.

Lastly, I contend the term "pro life" does not apply to human beings. If you are willing to pick up a weapon to defend yourself from an attacker, even if said attacker is unarmed, you are not pro life. If you consume the flesh of animals (as I do), you are not pro life. I could go on, but I think you get the picture, human beings are not inherently pro life. I'm not cool with late term abortions either, but I know deep down inside there is nothing I can do to prevent all such abortion procedures.

@SpikeTalon I'm obviously not trying to call you out for wanting murder or anything lol, but can't all of that reasoning be used to justify the legalization of murder for adults too? Because "It's going to happen anyways"?

Haha again, I'm just genuinely curious what you think about that. Because that argument can be used on all crimes, the way I see it.

@BossPig I've said this before and I'll say it here now too... the only reason adults murdering adults is illegal in this country is because the government doesn't want any freelance competition...

@SpikeTalon I appreciate the logical consistency! Lol.

The state does NOT own my life.

The only difference I guess, is the involvement of a life other than yours- and about handling responsibilities towards that life. You can be anti-suicide because you think people should be responsible for their own life but pro-choice because you don't want a second (innocent) party to directly suffer from people's choices/mistakes, I assume. Even if possible, I do think it makes little sense but hey, humans.

Leaving abortion aside, suicide is the ultimate form idividual freedom. Now assisted suicide, in my opinion, should be completely legal as it is the decision of the individual to take their own life with typically their doctor or other medical professional to aid them.

U got it all wrong. Body autonomy is reserved only for women. Men are not part of that as proven by the fact that we can't choose to not father a child we don't want that the woman keeps. It's one of the female privileges of our society.

You can choose not to recognise the child, it seems to me. Which gives you the right to not have any legal/moral boundary towards the child or the mother. It might not be the case in N.America but I'm sure it is?

Convoluted reasoning. Men can be pro-choice in supporting women's rights to control their own bodies.

@blul0tuus u can choose to not recognize it but once court ordered to give financial support u will go to jail for not being a parent when women can say they aren't financially ready and abort it.

@pbuck0145 u made my point, only women can have the right to body autonomy. Men are held responsible for actions while women arent.

@blul0tuus A man cannot get a financial abortion. He has no say if a woman chooses to kill his child...or if she chooses to keep it. As per US courts anyway. Oddly, the court cites the right of the unborn child when it comes to a man's Financial support. So in a woman's choice there are no rights of the child, but the rights of the child override a man's choice

Abortion is so tough for the libertarian crowd. I used to have a local politician (Madison, WI) who couldn't wrap his head around the libertarian split on abortion. I always told him some say you can abort and some say you can't. My position is that you can't, based on interfering with the liberty of the unborn child.
I definitely agree with you here. While I believe you shouldn't interfere with an unborn persons life, I do believe you can interfere with your own. I don't find it moral in any way, but it's your life.
(Not sure if you're libertarian)

I have no political affiliation..I deal with each issue from my point of view

Never thought about it like that but yeah, my body my suicide
