Who is your contemporary intellectual hero? I really love watching, listening to and reading Peterson and want to expand my learnings.

Peterson at the moment. I'm expanding my well with some older stuff recently.

I am doing the same. I can’t get enough. With maps of meaning, I feel like I’m back in college but now I care about learning.

Sam Harris - I wouldn't say a role model as everyone is inherently different in their own way and therefore seeking to be like someone is pointless.

But Sam Harris comes across as a brilliant intelligent man with a great tenacity to conduct a civil reasonable discussion or conversation. Of course no one is perfect but Sam's logical thinking and rational view of the world definitely sparks new thoughts and new ideas within me.

While I believe Jordan Peterson is an able conversationalist, his belief in mythology and its value seems to distract the blooming of reason and rational outlook of life. While mythology doesn't have to be thrown in the trash, it doesn't need to be glorified or made holier than what it is already.

Reason/Science can be the only value system (as of now) that all humans of earth can use to create morals and ethics. Mythology, although very close to people's hearts can never make sense to the human race across the globe. As each culture has its own mythology, we need a global connection to survive together as humans instead of christians, muslims, jews, hindus or buddhists.

I love Sam Harris. He's on a good line of thought that could have some very good outcomes should they be embraced with love rather than skepticism or nihilism. Hard to do some of that on a wide scale without depriving a number of people of certain liberties, but, if implemented carefully they could truly help us get to the next level.

@SpaceWillie2000 We need a new religion actually. A religion that deviates substantially from the current ancient religions but maintains significant control over the adherent of the same. This has to be a universal religion encompassing the human race as a whole irrespective of race, gender, sexuality, caste, creed or language.

Perhaps United Nations is one way of structuring such a religion for all humans to follow. This is bound to happen in the future once Artificial Intelligence takes hold of modern economy.

Role model wouls be ben shapiro. He is only a few years older than me and so freakin good at speaking

2

Victor David Hansen - intellectual farmer and historian.

2

Sam Harris all the way. Intelligent, unflappable, radical centre.

Dennis Prager

I was lucky enough to find Dr. Peterson at just the right time. As a single mom of a son, many of his lectures helped me guide him through a tough path to manhood. For that I'll be forever grateful

1

Extremely controversial, and disputed; Dr. E. Michael Jones

3

Justin Trudeau. Going back go his days as an assistent drama teacher and snowboarding instructor, his insight and approach to governance is one based in merit relating to real world experiences

Definitely a fan of Peterson.

I too am a firm admirer of Dr Peterson. I have listened to the three major courses and to some of the dialogues etc. I have been exploring ancient history on Youtube with much pleasure - you can find non aliens featuring docs! There is also Ancient recitations which reads off ancient texts. Marduk included. There are also some good evolutionary psychology lectures and talks around.

2

Sir Roger Scruton.

For 30 years he wrote and talked, alone in the wilderness as it were, about the topics now being discussed by the IDW.

Find his book "Fools, Frauds and Firebrands: Thinkers of the New Left" (updated from his 1985 book) on amazon

Besides Peterson I really enjoy the work of Orwell as he progresses deeper into the moral understandings of revolutionaries as well as the clear-cut understandings of what political movements or facets of a society makes a state totalitarians (e.g anti-speech, ideas being shut down etc).

Feel like there are too many on the list but I'd say JP is paving the way for me to discover more. I like Ben Shapiro as well. Being from Scotland I'm looking for a UK equivalent who can actually debate in public and not just make YouTube videos etc. It would be interesting to see if anyone here can point me in the right direction.

Hi 🙂 , Check out the new "Neil deGrasse Tyson Appreciation" group.

3

Richard Dawkins, Joe Rogan, ben shapiro, JBP, Dave rubin...basically anybody affiliated with this IDW. They’re what brought me here in fact. I will however be open to listening to any rational thinking person.

2

I have recently enjoyed Bryan Caplan's books and articles, despite his distaste for my faith. Pinker as well. They are very interesting.

What's your preference in reading???

3

Sam Harris.

3

The Four Horsemen - Dawkins Dennett Harris Hitchens.
For physics add Lawrence Krauss and Sean Carroll.
Old school feminism Camille Paglia and Christine Hoff Summers.

But if I had to pick one person - read Steven Pinker, lots and lots of Pinker.
A modern polymath if ever there was one.
[And a Canadian to boot!]

Lawrence Krauss is the man 🙂 !!
