Biden IS too weak to stop them, but then, so is USA, probably, if you're talking about military brute force... USA just doesn't have the same level of worldwide military supremacy it once had. If USA tried to take on Russia in Ukraine today, I'm not convinced they could win that war, no matter who POTUS was. Having someone like Biden certainly doesn't help, though!

The big problem is that Obama, along with Biden, started this conflict by facilitating the coup against Viktor Yanukovych, KNOWING Putin would disapprove and KNOWING Russia had the ability to maintain escalatory dominance in the region. Now, if Ukraine wants to survive, it will have to resign itself to surviving without Donetsk and Lugansk, and probably Crimea, too, at least until world geopolitics shift sufficiently for another strategy to be realistic. I doubt that will happen, though.

I think the U.S. could win it because of how weak Russia actually is militarily. But I think you are right in your assessment that our military has been far too weakened, a weakening which began in the Clinton administration in the 1990's.

@KeithThroop Yes, the US military has been weakened, but also, Putin has greatly improved Russia's military in the decades he has been in power. Among other things, there are the relatively new hypersonic anti-air missiles that, last I heard, USA had no answer to. From memory, I think they were about Mach 5. I hear they are also working on even faster missiles that are expected to travel at Mach 9! Also, if Russia's military is so weak, why is the whole world afraid to provoke Russia? It's not just Biden... Of course, there is also Russia's strategic alliance with China, who have also been active in the region in recent times.

Now, if Russia and USA were to fight in neutral territory, USA would doubtless win, but in the region of Ukraine and surrounds, I'm not so sure.

@DaveO276 You may be right, but I suspect that the main reason many countries are afraid of Russia is that Putin has demonstrated his ruthlessness so often. He doesn't have to bite very often when his bark is so well respected. On the other hand, he has every reason to believe that Biden has no bite at all. I guess we will have to wait and see.

President Biden should not have ordered the U.S. warships back from the Black Sea when Putin complained; he should have sent a few more. Going back to the days of the Soviet Union, Russian leaders like Putin have never liked such actions, but they are necessary. I speak, by the way, as a U.S. Navy veteran, who served aboard the U.S.S. Caron and who went the the Black Sea at least three times back in the 1980's, when the Soviet Union seemed to think they owned it. But we had President Reagan then rather than this spineless, dementia-stricken man who is surrounded by cowards who don't have dementia as an excuse.
