I was in a group conversation today(real people) and a women says that her "native american" father... blahh blahh blahh and a woman chimes in "they call themselves"indigenous peoples". I go "she is talking about her father, she gets to choose how she identifies herself, not you." The lady responds"i have never heard them call themselves that, it must be a texas thing." My response"my housemate identifies himself that way" her response"stop attacking me. Just drop it". .... any thoughts y'all?
“Indigenous peoples” is a generic term for any group which is native to the area in which they live...
It’s easy to get caught up in trying to say the right thing and making a mistake. What is polite and impolite can depend on region.
I agree with you there. I would not have said anything if the original lady had not identified her father as "native american"(which by bloodline would make her talking about her genetic heritage) i felt it was inappropriate for the second lady to correct her, but of course this second lady was probably only listening for trigger words anyway, since that seems to be the theme of the times. And i realize that everyone has trigger words. I have them as well. Mostly my experience is that native americans usually identify themselves by tribe, if the topic does even come up beyond a general statement.
I may be mistaken, but my opinion is that these two addresses are a northern/southern differentiation.
My husband is Native and that is exactly what he calls himself, “Native American.”
Sounds like she lost that argument and had nothing valid to say...
